Arnold Leads in Online Recall Surveys

STANFORD, Calif. -- Two recent Stanford University online surveys of California voters show GOP candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger beating Democratic Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante in the Oct. 7 election that could replace Governor Gray Davis.

Unlike conventional telephone polls, which have reported Bustamante narrowly leading the recall race, Californians who participated in the online surveys voted 40 percent for Schwarzenegger during two polls held between Aug. 29 and Sept. 8, and between Sept. 11 and 21....

Sacramento -- Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger came to what he described as "the Super Bowl of debates" Wednesday by promising surprises. But he found himself either on the sidelines or under attack, giving his supporters comfort but offering no breakthrough to seduce the undecided....

Was Gray Davis mentioned even once in last night's California gubernatorial debate? I didn't hear his name. As Arnold Schwarzenegger and Arianna Huffington swapped immature gibes, viewers of the debate may have wondered: What is this recall about, again? ....

Is that online survey scientific, or crap like all other online surveys?

I still think Davis is going to beat the recall.

Arnold pumped after debate

WASHINGTON - Arnold Schwarzenegger faced his opponents last night for the first and only time in a debate that had been billed as scripted, but turned into an unruly free-for-all - like the rest of the recall race. The questions had been issued in advance, allowing the Terminator's opponents to paint him as a girly-man who can't face his rivals without a script....

His rude act doesn't play well [Schwarzenegger (no bias in this headline!)]

Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger came out swinging in his first -- and only -- debate of the recall campaign Wednesday, and some say he swung so hard he may have hurt himself.

Schwarzenegger erred in his approach by engaging in hostile exchanges with independent candidate Arianna Huffington and relying heavily on "preprogrammed sound bites" in the place of in-depth policy discussions, said Richard Pineda, assistant professor of communication studies at Cal State San Bernardino....

SACRAMENTO -- The five top candidates to replace Gov. Gray Davis should he be recalled Oct. 7 met for the first time Wednesday in what was promised to be a free-wheeling dialogue but deteriorated at times into a pointed exchange of barbs between Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and independent columnist Arianna Huffington.

Schwarzenegger, born in Austria, and Huffington, born in Greece, sparred so frequently that at one point Huffington said the debate had become a contest "to see who can talk louder in a foreign accent." ....

Despite the hoopla that surrounds political debates, it's rare that one actually has a material impact on an election.

Wednesday night's debate among five contenders for the California governorship in the historic drive to unseat Gov. Gray Davis may be one of those exceptions....

Arnold scores political points in 'Super Bowl' of debates

His star power got him solo media access to Oprah, Larry King, Jay Leno and others, but in Wednesday's debate broadcast across the state and nation, Arnold Schwarzenegger -- actor turned politician -- for the first time faced four rivals who sought to tear him down.

And he held his own on the give-and-take of debate as well as his grasp of a wide range of issues, analysts agreed. A political novice going against experienced politicians and debaters, Schwarzenegger might not have won the debate but beat expectations, they said....

Losing One for the Gipper

Last night's debate underscored why Republicans in the Golden State are so torn between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom McClintock. As strong as Schwarzenegger was in delivering sound bites and barbs — And who could not savor his putdowns of the shrill and meretricious Arianna Huffington? — McClintock was a man of specifics and clear principles. California Republicans currently are splitting their votes between these two men, and this schism, if not eliminated soon, will likely prove fatal to the GOP's hopes of capturing the governorship. But Republican leaders pressuring McClintock to leave the race would do well to scrutinize Schwarzenegger as well. For it is becoming clear that despite an unprecedented media blitz and universal name recognition, only about one out of four Californians is willing to vote for him....
