About the ride
It is a national campaign and cross-country bus journey inspired by freedom rides that were part of the civil rights movement during the 1960s.
Organized by several labor unions, it is affiliated with the AFL-CIO and civil rights groups.
The ride includes 18 buses from nine cities across the nation that will converge on Washington, D.C., then in New York City on Oct. 4. Palm Springs was among the first stops.
The goal is to shed light on immigrants rights issues, from a better citizenship process for workers who pay taxes to new rules making it easier to reunite immigrants families. It includes a push for labor law protections for immigrant workers, for respect and civil rights.

Three buses from Coachella Valley High School unloaded about 250 students to join in a noisy noon rally that featured multicultural entertainers. Some students -- immigrants themselves or sons, daughters, friends and relatives of immigrants -- carried signs questioning what they consider to be outdated immigration laws.
What is this..A freakin' fieldtrip? California's tax dollars at work.

"I want my children and grandchildren to have a future that includes a good standard of living and real rights on the job," she said.So do I. This is understandable. But why doesn't the speaker try to do this in Mexico? Presuming that they are an illegal alien. Any effort to overcome inequities in the treatment of legal immigrants is worthy of support.

"Were here to fight for our rights," Nunez said. Easier than fighting for them in Mexico, I suppose.
As the saying goes, if you can't choose your battles, choose your battlefields.
