My Economic Policy California needs someone to terminate taxes.

BY ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER Wednesday, September 24, 2003 12:01 a.m. EDT

I have often said that the two people who have most profoundly impacted my thinking on economics are Milton Friedman and Adam Smith. At Christmas I sometimes annoy some of my more liberal Hollywood friends by sending them a gift of Mr. Friedman's classic economic primer, "Free to Choose." What I learned from Messrs. Friedman and Smith is a lesson that every political leader should never forget: that when the heavy fist of government becomes too overbearing and intrusive, it stifles the unlimited wealth creation process of a free people operating under a free enterprise system....

TOTAL RECALL
McClintock bests Dean
in Net donations
Governor candidate pulling in $50,000 a day via Web

While presidential candidate Howard Dean has won praise for his ability to raise money via the Internet, state Sen. Tom McClintock, a Republican candidate for governor in California's free-for-all recall election, says, when considering daily totals, he is raising more online cash than is the Vermont Democrat....

Hugh Hewitt: California recall: One issue, and one issue only

The big debate gets underway at 6:00 p.m. tonight, PST, and the media is working itself into a frenzy. My take is that unless Arnold comes up with the California equivalent of President Ford's declaration of a free Poland in 1976, the debate will be a non-factor in the race....

Indian Givers--II - Tribes that run California casinos aim to run the whole state ~ John Fund

JOHN FUND'S POLITICAL DIARY

Indian Givers--II
Tribes that run California casinos aim to run the whole state.

Wednesday, September 24, 2003 12:01 a.m.

California state judge Loren McMaster ruled this week that Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante violated campaign laws by paying for a TV ad campaign with more than $3 million from Indian casinos and unions, donated in violation of state contribution limits. Richie Ross, Mr. Bustamante's campaign manager, says the campaign has already spent the money and thus can't comply with the judge's order to return it to the donors. The controversy will dog Mr. Bustamante's campaign as well as raise questions about the disproportionate influence that Indian casinos now exercise in California government....

Oy. The full ninth circuit has now reversed the ruling of three of its more creative members and allowed the October 7 statewide California recall election to proceed as scheduled. Punch card voting, it turns out, is not a violation of civil rights. This came as a relief to the hundreds of thousands of voters who had already cast absentee ballots....

More legal hurdles could arise in Calif.

AP | 9/24/03 | DAVID KRAVETS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California's recall election is headed forward, but it could become embroiled in more litigation after the Oct. 7 vote if a close tally forces a Florida-style recount. Legal experts said Tuesday's federal appellate court ruling to reinstate the election date despite the fact six counties use error-prone punch-card ballots leaves the door open to lawsuits....

THAL, AUSTRIA - When Arnold Schwarzenegger left this tiny Alpine farming village to chase bodybuilding dreams in America, he retained more of his upbringing than just his trademark accent, people here say.

There's a lot of Europe left in the California gubernatorial candidate, says Werner Kopacka, who has known Mr. Schwarzenegger for 20 years "And even the most conservative European is more concerned with the social issues of ordinary people than the most social[ist] American," says Mr. Kopacka, a reporter with the newspaper Kronen Zeitung. "He is a politician of a different type for America - a conservative who would really protect the small guy." ....

JUDGES RECALL THE LAW

New York Post ^ | 9/24/03
Posted on 09/24/2003 2:49 AM PDT by kattracks

September 24, 2003 -- The Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, a highly liberal body in its own right, yesterday made quick work of the attempt by three of its most liberal judges to stop California's recall vote. Sitting en banc, 11 other judges threw out their colleagues' temporary restraining order and declared the recall back on for Oct. 7.
"A federal court cannot lightly interfere with or enjoin a state election," the panel declared - a dictum the original three judges seem not to have seriously considered....

The Middle Wins [Letter to the Editor Barf]

Los Angeles Daily News | 09-24-2003 | Prentiss A. Moore
Posted on 09/24/2003 6:49 AM PDT by boris

I always thought politicians and governance were about compromise and building bridges. I think Bill Clinton was correct when he noted that conservatives govern with ideology, while Democrats do it with ideas.

Conservatives (and I include state Sen. Tom McClintock) see a black and white world, are inflexible in their beliefs, and are unwilling to bend...

Mc Clintock has produced very little as a legislator other than a history of "no" votes.

Conservatives will entertain no ideas outside of their ideology, while the diversity of the Democrats assures discussion of all ideas. It has also been said that there are 20 percent on the far left (ideologues), another 20 percent on the far right (also ideologues), with 60 percent in the middle. It's that middle that can win elections....

California: Ruling rocks wobbly budget deal. Judge blocks the sale of pension bonds

Sacramento Bee ^ | September 24, 2003 | John Hill
Posted on 09/24/2003 7:39 AM PDT by John Jorsett

The shaky budget approved by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Gray Davis two months ago began to unravel Tuesday when a Sacramento Superior Court judge blocked the sale of a $2 billion bond to cover the state's pension payments. Unless the decision is reversed on appeal, it would blow a $2 billion hole in this year's budget, erasing a rainy-day reserve of about that amount. If any of the spending plan's other assumptions fall through -- as many analysts predict they will -- the state would find itself facing another deficit in the fiscal year that began July 1....

Arnold Schwarzenegger's conservative fans have been waiting for Arnold the candidate to sound like Arnold the private citizen. Much of what he has been saying has no doubt been lost in the hubbub over the recall process, but he has not really emerged as the powerful spokesman for free enterprise and unlimited opportunity that we expected to hear.

Until now. In this morning's Wall Street Journal, Arnold knocks it out of the park with a ringing endorsement of Friedmanesque economics as applied to California governance: ....
