Hugh Hewitt: California recall: One issue, and one issue only
WorldNetDaily.com ^ | Wednesday, September 24, 2003 | Hugh Hewitt

Posted on 09/24/2003 12:11:47 AM PDT by JohnHuang2

The big debate gets underway at 6:00 p.m. tonight, PST, and the media is working itself into a frenzy. My take is that unless Arnold comes up with the California equivalent of President Ford's declaration of a free Poland in 1976, the debate will be a non-factor in the race.

Oh, it could seal the end of Tom McClintock's career if he tries to land cheap shots on Arnold, and it might scare another few points away from Cruz when he announces his latest lame-brained idea ("We should socialize surfing – all boards the same length, all waves the same height and rides divided up equally, with extra attention paid to people who cannot surf!"). Arianna's desperation is growing more and more repellant, so expect some shrieking from her end of the stage, but generally, a non-event.

But no matter how odd the behavior of the second-tier candidates, or how boring the questions, it just won't matter. There is only one issue that matters to most voters. It absorbs all other issues in this race: The corruption in Sacramento.

The workers' comp mess? It is about the corrupt influence of the trial lawyers. The huge giveaways to prison guards and other public-employee unions? The corrupt influence of big labor. The massive expansion of tribal casinos and the obscene amount of money pouring from the slots into the voting process? The corrupt influence of California's Indian tribes.

Most of this corruption is legal. Most corruption is. But the stench of the decay in Sacramento doesn't diminish because Gray Davis has invented transparency in payoffs. The tribes brazenly gave millions to Cruz who transferred it to an anti-initiative campaign that features, surprise, Cruz. The money-laundering is out in the open, on the front lawn of the State House – but it is no less corrupt.

The tribes pumped huge sums into a pro-McClintock fund. This is legal, but it stinks. It is a manipulation of the electorate – a cynical assist to Cruz via the draining of votes from Arnold. Corrupt? Of course it is. Tom McClintock cannot raise enough money on his own under the $21,200 limit of the law, so he's welcoming the tribes' largesse via an independent expenditure.

Every single interest group lined up to get something from Gray as Gov. Clouseau's career dwindled into its final month. All the hands were stuck out, and Gray walked the line distributing bennies all along the way. Hiram Johnson never imagined corruption on this scale. The Los Angeles Times tut-tuts that the recall is bad for the state. How can anything that smashes the machine up north be bad for the state?

The scale of the collapse of public ethics is so huge that most pundits have given up commenting on it. Tammany is reincarnate. The Davis administration is epic in its fundraising and epic in its deal-making. It is the only thing that will be memorable about Davis – the size of his appetite for cash and the sleaze that was required to feed that appetite.

On Thursday, observers will be dissecting what Arnold said about paid leave or what Cruz said about the car tax. How boring and how beside the point.

This election is about the numbers of people that have a share in Davis, Inc. vs. the rest of us.

I think there are more of us than there are of them and that as a result Arnold wins hands down. Only McClintock can save Cruz at this point. The only interesting question is will he?

demnomo is right on. This is all being fueled by Nevada/New Jersey, and it's out of control. There are people involved here who aren't really of Indian ancestry; they are making up these tribes out of their imaginations. Gee, I have 26 acres, maybe I'll become an Indian and cash in. Hmmmmmmmmm

Anyone know if tonight's debate is being broadcast nationally? I'm not a Californian, but I'd love to see it.

Thank you! I saw a little bit of "Fox and Friends" this morning. They talked about the debates but, in the portion I saw, did not mention that they would be carrying them.

Boxer and her son being involved in this Red Reparations scam is a real scandal in my neck of the woods. It even (gasp) outraged Senator Boxer's limousine liberal supporters in Marin County--especially since the "Tribe" was originally eyeing lands next to the San Francisco Bay. Couldn't have those fancy jogging paths and hiking areas sullied by a sleazy casino, so the Boxer and her pals Feinstein and Woolsey shooed the Indians over to my hometown. Sigh.

I'm part Ojibwe Indian. My tribe hails from Minnesota. Let me tell you that Indian Gaming did not bless the Reservation. The tribe from New Jersey runs the place, using a couple of Indian families as their patsies. Lots of greed, in-fighting and corruption. And that's just on the Reservation. There were a few arrests for embezzlement, drug dealing and prostitution. Aside from that, the same families (from New Jersey and the Res) control the politics, money distribution and who is or is not on the rosters.

You could probably use me as your "front woman." I've got more Native American blood in my veins than this guy who heads the newly-reconstituted Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria.

Of course, we'd need the backing of one of the families, er, tribes from Nevada or New Jersey. ;)

Thanks for posting that about the Tribes in CA! When I looked up political contributions, the Tribes have no limit on how much they can contribute to a candidate. That smells even more. The Indians want their sovereignty over their land, then their political donations should be declared as coming from a foreign entity. You cannot have it both ways IMHO!

In British Columbia, "First Nations Bands" have claimed 105% of the entire province as their land. Some natives have been educated in the law - subsidised of course - and are using 'European based' law to fight the very taxpayers who paid their way.

Whites are practically helpless to stop this kind of preferential treatment. Californians had better beware of giving 'preferences' to certain groups because of their bloodline.

They've mentioned it several times this afternoon. I don't know if the other news networks are carrying it or not, I haven't had them on today.

That deal with Boxer and her son really smells!

I am not surprised to hear that the whole tribe gets very little of the money. It is one reason they are fighting here in Oklahoma to keep the Tribes from getting Class III gambling -- a lot of tribal members here are opposed to Class III gambling as well. Right now it is Bingo and some machines so the corruption is not there.

Was talking to someone from the Cherokee's and he had never heard of some of the tribes that are involved in gambling. He has been convinced that some of these groups are are nothing but fronts! I sent him your comments which he will enjoy! The Cherokee's already are split into factions with the former Chief barracading himself in their HQ because he refused to honor the election several years ago. Cannot imagine what Class III gambling would do to that trible!

Shilling for Schwarzenegger: Hugh Hewitt strikes again

Hugh Hewitt, a well-known conservative radio talk show host and political columnist, has written a short column today called California recall: One issue, and one issue only

Hewitt got on the Arnold Schwarzenegger bandwagon the day after the actor's candidacy was announced on Jay Leno's Tonight Show. His column today is a hopeful attempt to at favorable spin for Schwarzenegger prior to tonight's gubernatorial debate (6:00 pm, PDT), the first at which Schwarzenegger's appeared.

A few of Hugh's highlights...

My take is that unless Arnold comes up with the California equivalent of President Ford's declaration of a free Poland in 1976, the debate will be a non-factor in the race.

Oh, it could seal the end of Tom McClintock's career if he tries to land cheap shots on Arnold

Hugh Hewitt is fretting about "cheap shots" against the debate-ducking, excited-to-be-learning-the-issues Anold Schwarzenegger?

Will Hewitt's definition of "cheap shots" include any mention of Schwarzenegger's left-leaning comments or positions that are the issue for tens of thousands of California Republicans not willing, at this point, to vote for Arnold? Should McClintock tip-toe around all of that, for the dubious "good of the party?"

Schwarzenegger has conducted a run-and-hide campaign, hoping the field would clear as he ran out the clock. Didn't happen, Hugh. Bad strategy.

Schwarzenegger missed chances to earn respect and sway holdouts by skipping debates. There are consequences to missed opportunities...

I've often said, tell my much-loved very-liberal sister what a sell-out compromised nonChristian RINO I am for supporting Schwarzenegger, and watch the uncontrolled, incredulous hilarity begin.

Sounds like your sister is delusional. Paranoids often see christianity lurking where it isn't.
