Kelsey Grammer Eyeing Senate Run

Top-rated TV star Kelsey Grammer announced Monday night that he would like to quit show business and enter politics - perhaps as Senator from California.

"I've always thought that since I did not serve in the military and since I was raised by a military man, my grandfather, that we all have an obligation to try to perform some service to the country," the "Frasier" star told Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes."

"And the only thing I can think of is to attempt maybe a political office at some point in my life," Grammer added.

When it came to concrete plans, the sitcom star sounded vague, but suggested he'd like to serve as "senator of whatever state I was living in." Grammer now resides in California.

The NBC star said he'd likely run as a Republican, though he's not a conservative. "I consider myself a centrist, I suppose, but I basically believe in trying to preserve as much opportunity for the individual, as long as that individual chooses to work as hard as he can."

Grammer said he has long secretly harbored political ambitions, telling "Hannity & Colmes," "I used to say that I wanted to be president when I was a boy."

As far as his long-running hit TV series "Frasier," Grammer said that this year would be its last.

On Tuesday, Hannity announced that Grammer would reprise his TV role as a talk radio host by filling in on the Fox talker's nationally syndicated radio show sometime next week.

Okay, I have now read all the post on this thread (up to 46 at this time) and the one thing they have in common is my perception that no one actually saw Kelsey Grammer on "Hannity and Colmes".

First, his politics. Sean brought it up and continues to say "in California" (Sean gets a little too excited sometimes). Grammer clearly says (try listening folks) he would one day like to run for the Senate "from what ever state I'm living in".

He then fleshed out his argument when Sean asked if he would consider a governorship. Kelsey is a little to naive when he thinks being 1 of 100 (again, Sean made this point) that he could help the nation. But maybe he could, who knows. It was obvious by his statements that he wants to represent his state ("where ever I'm living" he said" in the US Senate and he also wants to work on national policy).

He especially said he wanted to fight the myth that this country is all about the "rich vs. the poor" and said "it never has been".

Yes, he said he's somewhat more centrist but he also said he clearly leaned farther to the right. And when Colmes brought up his past and his problems, he didn't pull a Clinton and waffle. He said, "I was screwed up, I got help, I'll never do that again" in so many words. He even said, "thanks to FoxNews, more of us conservatives can come out of the closet (referencing Hollywood)" and told Alan that it's not really such a liberal bastion as is believed.

He also said there was nothing left in his closet since it's all been aired. And isn't the mantra of the left to forgive and move on?

As to his reasons, he said that he was raised by his grandfather that was a military man that showed him everyone should serve. He himself didn't go the military route so he wants to serve as an elected official. But of course that attitude has become somewhat tainted over the years. That is proved by those on this post pooh-poohing Grammer.

He also said they were going to end "Frasier" this year but not because he cared to. He made it clear that NBC has made no move to ask them back. He even said he'd do another season after this one if they asked and went so far to say he'd do it for no money.

But what got me was the entire time we was humble, smiling, coherent, centered, and obviously now at one with himself and his life. He has plenty of money, a beautiful wife and 4 year old daughter (that I hear he had to endure many medical procedures to produce due to some fertility problems).

I have to declare I've always like "Frasier". I didn't care for his character that much on "Cheers" though. I think it is one of the best comedy shows written in that it's smart and they don't have to resort to silly situations and predictable lines. And it's obvious they make fun of his arrogant and pompous lifestyle. The "elite" are treated as the phonies they are.

But again, he said he had no plan to run for office. He clearly said he thought about it in the future.

I wish more people would watch, listen or read about what was actually said before attacking without basis.

The problem (as I see it) with the "people who have been working hard for many years, down in the trenches, doing the tough political work," is that the motivation necessary for those many years of wallowing in unsavory nastiness is in itself a mark of Cain.

Who would willingly suffer such ignominy? One must either be an egregious fanatic (in a political sense - which means that one's obsession is concerned with achieving governmental power, directly or indirectly, to compel obedience from people otherwise unwilling to do one's bidding) or a calculatingly exploitative thieving booger who seeks political power because he wants to make it "pay off" in some materially advantageous manner.

Neither type of person makes a very good neighbor, and neither can clear-headedly be trusted with public office by any sane, reasonable, actively thinking individual.

Consider the notion that the *BEST* possible thing to do to such people is to "knock them off their feet and throw all their hard work away."

I agree with a lot of what you are saying, but it can/will open the door for RINOs to come in, and because of name recognition, the things they do/say that are not what you or I might consider to be Conservative in nature will be ignored. I know, not all Republicans are Conservatives and not all Conservatives are Republican.

I would like to see all politicans, of both parties, swept out of office every 10 years or so. Most of our politicans, of both parties, care more about being a politician than about representing you or I. They can talk about how they do stuff on behalf of us, for us, etc., but it's a bunch of b.s.
