Not REAL Kona, just the cheap, fake, 1 or 2 beans per pound variety found at any supermarket. I've never tried the real thing. If/when I do it will be black. Hope that clears things up.

My stuff has been called the brew of doom.
I love the one gallon and three pounds stuff.
Sounds like the coffee that Quxsey in te mess section used to make while my unit was in the field.
I've had Columbians shy away from it, been told there's "death in the pot", and had Navy guys swear I'm trying to kill them.
(Navy usually has the strongest brew around. Right?)
I include my personal mix for humor reasons.
A few have tried it, and they say it's nice stuff.
I assume I was being humored as they wrote on a board "DO NOT DO THIS AGAIN" somewhere.

Working on my third pint of Louisiana style cafe au lait made with French Market coffee and chicory. I make the coffee extra strong, and cut it with hot milk about 3 parts coffee to one part milk.

That's posted above the coffee maker here.
We used to have the Sunday strip where TPHB told the intern to Do Something with the sludge coming from the plant...

Okay, I'll have to call off the Swat team. Real Kona will remind you of your first sexual experience. (If it was good)

Fairly high percentage of votes for chicory coffee, but nobody voting for Cafe du Monde but me?

One of the mess sections I had the unfortune of dealing with, used to make their "River coffee" for us when we had to run overnight operations. That stuff would make your hair stand on end. We called it nuclear waste. It actually had one thing good about it: you WOULD NOT fall asleep while under its influence. Best No Doze I ever had.

We had mini-hallucinations on our stuff.
We often joked that Quxsey spiked the brew.
It's kinda odd to be up at 0300, been awake for several days straight, just had coffee, and be watching the ground ripple like water.
But it could also be attributable to sleep deprivation.
I was assigned to help the mess section once.
And only once.
I helped brew the coffee.
Well, let's say that people complained of extreme stomach pain and uncontrollable jitters afterwards.
After that, I was banned form helping the mess section.
And after making coffee for FDC using their 'field expedient' coffeepot, I was banned from making coffee.
The only guy who LIKED my brew was Quxsey.

What I'm enjoying right now....
supermarket coffee beans you can grind right there. Grind 'em to espresso fineness. I go for a breakfast blend and about half french roast. Run it through an espresso maker.
Dilute to taste with hot water. No burnt husks to worry about with DIY grinding, so no sour dishrag taste if it sits cold awhile. I don't mind nuking it to warm it up.
In the morning sometimes, I add a good dollup of heavy cream, pure cream if you can find it. But never nuke the coffee with cream in it.
Simple to make, simple to adjust, no waste. Can top up quickly to required caffiene level in bloodstream.

LOL!
I ran my own coffee mess in Kitty Hawk (I was Hangar Deck Officer), and I can assure you that we DID NOT drink U.S. Navy Mark 1, Mod 0 coffee!
Kearsarge was a different matter -- we did not have a coffee mess in the Ready Room, and had to drink the good ole Navy stuff. But, we were young, then, and didn't know any better.
