If you're a U.S. Senator in the Democratic party, not only can you use the n-word on national television (twice), you can be a former Klansman and get a free pass.

The monkey reference is clearly intended to mean "less evolved" than white Americans. There is no way in hell that his words could be interpreted in any other fashion.

Why is calling a black man a monkey a racial slur? According to the staunch evolutionists on this site, all men were descended from the lower primates and all mankind comes from progenitors in Africa.
Moreover, recent developments in DNA research have led scientists to declare that there are no true racial differences among modern men only minor adaptive traits.
I called my kid a monkey frequently as he was growing up because of his behavior not due to physical features.
Anyway his apology is on the order of, "I'm sorry you're ugly."

This is simply a case of prohibited speech; he went over the line and he got tagged.

I'd like to have a dollar for every editorial cartoon I have seen which portrays President Bush as a monkey, complete with big ears and sometimes a tail.
No racism there, for some reason. In fact, it's looked on as worthy political dialogue!

He made a similar reference last monthI despise PC, but I think it shows poor judgement at the very least for Lonsberry to continue with this monkey slur. He doesn't deserved to be fired, but I don't think a 2 day suspension is totally out of line. Unfortunately for him I expect the liberals to demand his head on a platter; if he doesn't bow down before the liberal God of PC and apologise profusely, it wouldn't surprise me if he is ultimately let go.

If the reference is intended to mean 'less evolved' why is it bad to call the mayor a monkey but not a big deal to portray Bush as a chimp?

What the heck is a county executive? It must outrank a mayor; maybe the county hasn't had a black executive yet and that is why some are so sensitive.
Wouldn't all indecency necessarily be public? How else could you make the determination?

I just read your tagline; I don't take advice from a Totemic Simsonite.

If the politician at issue was white, would the monkey references be a problem? If not, then why not? I am not sure, but I also wonder, if the roles were exactly reversed, would it be a problem?

"Look at that little monkey run!" Howard Cosell, Monday Night Football, in October of 1983, on Redskins receiver Alvin Garrett. Cosell said it was an expression he used all the time when refering to his little grandson but it was instrumental in Cosell's leaving the show shortly thereafter. Was Howard racist? I doubt it, but even twenty years ago it got him in hot water. He'd be crucified today.

What is this business of respect being a right? Respect is something that must be earned, else it isn't yours.

Black conservative pingIf you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.
[As i mentioned, the B/C & JD! lists are going to float into and out of whack over the forseeable future, while I try to cobble a rig back together for myself. My apologies for any incovenience or misunderstandings in this time frame. New signups/removals may be flaky in this time-frame as well; please bear with me, and keep in mind you may have to FReemail me more than once for me to get it done. Thanks again!]

Words mean different things when applied to different people. Calling a white person a monkey has no historical, cultural etc, significance. Calling a black person a monkey brings up a whole host of historical issues (think about how racist literature has portrated blacks- as apes, "jungle-bunnies" etc. Imagine using the N-word on a white person- it would be meaningless and not really insulting. Use it on a black person, you get a different result.
i hear you, babe!
i just think it takes too much energy to be mad at what some white person is calling me!
we, as a race has other problems we should be working on. not what name we are being called.
i still think he should not be fired!!
To: dmz
Now you just insulted all monkeys.
To: Modernman
Calling a white person a monkey has no historical, cultural etc, significance Au contraire. Okay, cult significance. In the "Buckaroo Banzai" movie, Dr. Emilio Lizardo(sp?) says
"Laugh While You Can, Monkey Boy" to a white, white coated, asylum worker.

** My dad used to call my sister and I his little chimps, because we'd be jumping all over him and paying with his beard. It was a pet name when we were kids.
I think they should not have fired him. If he really is racist, it will come out and he will look like an idiot.

"What the heck is a county executive?"
King County (Seattle) has one and he happens to be black, too. I'd never refer to him as a monkey. A monkey would be doing a much better job! (Yes, he's a democrat)
