Inside the numbers: California

Last weekend, the Emmy Awards featured a skit in which comedian Darrell Hammond impersonated Arnold Schwarzenegger. The bit was funny at first, but it quickly lost punch -- just like the recall election itself. Recent polls show fewer and fewer California voters supporting the recall effort, suggesting that even the most ardent Republicans should hope this debacle soon melts away, regardless of who ends up governor.
Why the gloomy outlook? ....

Here's my major news story: I voted last Friday ... for recall, Arnold, and Prop 54, and against Prop 53. I am of course worried that this darn IBM punch card technology, which has only been in continuous successful use since the 1890 census, may mess up the vote on Prop 54, which is needed very badly.

PPIC Statewide Survey: September 2003

September 2003, 36 pp.

Full text of report (PDF)
This is the 39th PPIC Statewide Survey and the 15th in a series of large-scale public opinion polls that PPIC is conducting on a periodic basis throughout California's election cycles. The purpose of this series is to develop an objective, in-depth profile of the social, economic, and political forces affecting public policy preferences and ballot choices in California.
Some findings of the current survey
* Californian's trust in their state government is at its lowest level since the statewide survey began in 1998. Only 27% of state residents say they trust the government in Sacramento to do what is right just about always or most of the time.
* Disapproval ratings for Governor Davis remain high (65%), and 53% of likely voters say they would vote to remove him from office.
* A majority of Californians (58%) say their region remains mired in an economic recession. Two-thirds of Californians (67%) think the state is headed in the wrong direction.
* If the 2004 presidential election were held today, 45% of the state's likely voters say they would vote for the Democratic nominee, 40% would vote for George W. Bush.

A new campaign ad by Arnold Schwarzenegger took on California's powerful Indian tribes with accusations they play "money politics" in Sacramento and make billions without paying their fair share.
The ad, which began airing Monday, also implicitly criticizes Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock by saying, "All the other major candidates take their money and pander to them. I don't play that game." ....

'Governor Joke'? Not Arnold
New York Daily News ^ | 9/23/03 | Michael Kramer

Desperate for a freak show, I went to the circus last week. Naturally, I traveled to California, site of the modern era's most ridiculous politics. Specifically, I went to watch Arnold make a fool of himself. I was disappointed.
Sure, Schwarzenegger speaks funny. From his mouth, Caluhfornia is Caleefornia. But that's it. If you ignore his accent, Arnold on the stump is no worse than most politicians. That doesn't mean he'd make a good governor, only that he isn't so bad as a candidate....

Log Cabin Republicans Endorse Arnold

The California chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay organization, endorsed Arnold Schwarzenegger for governor Monday.
The organization described Schwarzenegger as a "uniter." His main Republican opponent, State Sen. Tom McClintock, has focused his efforts on gaining the support of Christian conservatives, often at odds with the Log Cabin Republicans....

Return of Donations Ordered (Bustamante)
LA Times ^ | 9-23-03 | Dan Morain
Posted on 09/23/2003 5:41 AM PDT by veronica
Judge says Bustamante can't use millions from old campaign fund. An aide says it's been spent.
A judge ruled Monday that Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante broke campaign laws by using about $4 million in donations to pay for an advertising blitz.
The judge ordered Bustamante to return the contributions. But, perhaps rendering the decision more political than practical, Bustamante's chief political consultant said all the money was gone.
In a 12-page order issued in response to a lawsuit by a Republican state senator, Sacramento Superior Court Judge Loren McMaster wrote that a fund-raising maneuver Bustamante had employed had violated the "plain and unambiguous language" of Proposition 34. That measure, passed by voters in 2000, caps political contributions at $21,200 in the recall race....

I prefer McClintock, but I may have to vote for Arnold

My Republican friends and I are faced with a dilemma. I attended the California Republican Party Convention in Los Angeles two weeks ago.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and his allies were very visible and active. He made a sweep through town on Saturday and wooed attendees at an outdoor rally and a luncheon speech.
Tom McClintock's supporters were busy, too. He was the keynote speaker at a rally in Long Beach and was the Saturday night banquet speaker.
The weekend was exceedingly civil. There were no shouting matches between the camps. There are still a few people who are opposed to the recall and intend to vote against it. An overwhelming majority plan to vote for Schwarzenegger or McClintock.
Yet, most of the folks I talked with are flummoxed about the potential outcome and want McClintock to get out of the race to assure a Schwarzenegger victory....

It is critical to think out of the box, beyond California. For the clintons, the California recall election is no less than a proxy for their war with the Kennedys for the control of the Democrat Party (and the country)....

Issa urges no vote on recall if McClintock and Schwarzenegger stay in race

Man behind recall urges Schwarzenegger or McClintock to drop out
AP ^ | 9-23 | AP
Posted on 09/23/2003 10:10 AM PDT by ambrose
San Francisco-AP -- The man who bankrolled the California recall effort is insisting that one of the two leading Republicans in the governor's race drop out. And to make it happen, he's issuing a political threat. Congressman Darrell Issa (EYE'-suh) is afraid that Republican state senator Tom McClintock and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger will split conservative support -- and guarantee a victory for Democratic Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante (boost-ah-MAHN'-tay) if California's governor is recalled. So now Issa says one of the two Republicans must drop out -- or he'll dramatically reverse his stance and start calling for the recall to be defeated.Issa spent one-point-seven (m) million dollars putting the recall question on the ballot....

LOS ANGELES The California recall election (search) will go on Oct. 7 as scheduled, a full panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously Tuesday.
