Californians Are Fleeing The Golden State At An Alarming Rate

Toogood Reports ^ | September 22, 2003 | Michael D. Shaw
Posted on 09/22/2003 9:40 AM PDT by Vindiciae Contra TyrannoSCOTUS

Perhaps it's fate. California, named after a mythical island of paradise, as described in a 16th century Spanish novel, may have been too good to last. Whether you blame incredible amounts of immigration [nearly 12 million people in the last 25 years or so into a current population of around 35 million], overcrowding, high taxes, or the most socialistic state government in the country bar none, Californians are leaving at an alarming rate....

Posted on 09/22/2003 9:32 AM PDT by engrpat

Bills offer immigrant privileges Gov. Gray Davis is poised to decide on two controversial measures that could give illegal residents more rights.

By Jim Sanders -- Bee Capitol Bureau Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Monday, September 22, 2003 After granting illegal immigrants the right to obtain driver's licenses in California, Gov. Gray Davis now must decide whether to sign bills qualifying them for free community college tuition and requiring local governments to honor identification cards issued by the Mexican government.

The Democratic governor, who signed the controversial driver's license legislation as he fights the attempt to recall him from office, has not yet taken a position on the other two measures, spokesman Russell Lopez said....

Gov. Gray Davis' prospects for keeping his job appear to be brightening, according to a new poll that shows growing opposition to the recall movement.

Medved Gets it Wrong on CA Poll: Bustamante is not running third among California Latinos

Michael Medved Radio Show - KRLA 870 ^ | September 22nd, 2003 | Sabertooth
Posted on 09/22/2003 1:23 PM PDT by Sabertooth

Michael Medved made a substantial error in his on-air reporting today of the Public Policy Instute Poll results for California Latinos.

Medved reported Cruz Bustamante running third among Latinos here, 7% behind Arnold Schwarzenegger, with Tom McClintock running second. Medved's comments were in the context of his greater point that Bustamante's crude appeals on drivers' licenses and in-state tuition for "immigrants" (while ignoring that the issue is really Illegal Aliens) aren't working very well in California's Latino community.

The facts of the poll indicate otherwise....

Judge: Cruz can't accept big Indian money

California Insider ^ | 09/22/2003 | Dan Weintraub
Posted on 09/22/2003 1:54 PM PDT by DodgeRam

A Sacramento Superior Court judge has just ruled that Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante cannot legally accept large contributions from the Indian casino tribes and use them to pay for television commercials showing him arguing against Proposition 54, the racial privacy initiative. The court ruled that the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission erred in advising state politicians that they could raise money in excess of the $21,200 limits if they had a political committee in place before the limits were approved by voters in November, 2000. The ruling seems to leave Bustamante with no choice but to return the millions in Indian casino contributions he has received, and the Indians no choice other than to launch independent campaigns on Bustamante’s behalf. Here is the full ruling....

PROP 54 CAMPAIGN CHAIR WARD CONNERLY APPLAUDS

SACRAMENTO, CALIF.--Thanks to state Senator Ross Johnson’s bold leadership, a ruling by a Sacramento County Superior Court judge today found Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante in violation of the Political Reform Act. Senator Johnson filed a lawsuit asserting that Bustamante was violating state campaign finance laws when the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) failed to assert its authority to enforce the law. Senator Johnson was vindicated today, as the Court found Bustamante guilty of the most blatant violation of the Political Reform Act in California history. Ward Connerly, chairman of the Yes on Proposition 54 campaign, applauded the ruling....
