Two recall replacement candidates racing to tell voters what they stand for were reminded Sunday of the problems that await them should they win the governorship -- the crisis in affordable health care, the scarcity and rising cost of housing, the declining performance of the state's schools and the dispute over providing driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants.

It would be nice if people could have affordable housing, and people at all income groups other than the very highest are undeniably hurt greatly by this. Sadly, I include myself among their number despite a income qualifying me for prime quality housing in almost any other state.

But how to do this when the supply of housing is essentially fixed (limited amounts of land, nobody wanting to switch from single family to multi-family housing, etc) is a puzzle that I don't think either side has solved.

And I think it's irresponsible for politicians - whether Bustamante or McClintock - to use this as an issue without any ideas on how to improve matters.

If you give people subsidies, you just increase demand, which is going to make housing unaffordable to others. That's a zero-sum game that's just plain dumb.

I'm not familiar with Tom's position on this. The only thing I have read - and it was today - was that he wants to encourage more home construction. No elaboration provided in article. I don't see anything on his website either. Sorry.

Sometimes I wonder if the housing crunch has something to do with the number of people that hold more than one house as an investment. I know a lot of people that own several homes and have no intention of selling any of them. Does this create an artificial shortage? Probably not but I can't help but wonder.

I think most people who keep houses as investments rent them out, and the shortage of good quality rental housing is just as bad as that of houses for sale.

So I don't think that affects things much.

This is to some extent a valid attack on McClintock, since his stump speech talks about cheap housing from long ago and compares it to the absolutely ghastly situation today for anyone not already a homeowner.

You have to ask why current housing prices are not ample encouragement for more home production at all levels.

Unfortunately, even if you could devise a policy that would magically decrease home prices, you would be simply helping those who need housing at the expense of those who have it, which is hardly a recipe for victory.

I think this could be the toughest issue in California today, even more so than taxes and the state budget. No matter what happens, including leaving things as they are, people are hurt badly by the housing situation, and yet it's completely off most peoples' radar.
