Bustamante criticizes low-paying companies (McClintock questions Schwarzenegger's funds)

"You know, people talk about how bad it is in California. It's not that bad," said Bustamante, who nevertheless tailored his message for an audience in a county where more than one in five workers are unemployed. To companies that would prefer to move overseas to pay "50 cents an hour or $10 a day," Bustamante said, "Leave! We want good jobs in California. We want decent paying jobs in California." ....

Opposition to Recall Gaining in Poll
AP ^ | 9-21-03 | AP
Posted on 09/21/2003 1:55 AM PDT by ambrose
By TOM CHORNEAU, Associated Press Writer
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gov. Gray Davis (news - web sites)' prospects for keeping his job appear to be brightening, according to a new poll that shows growing opposition to the recall movement.
The Public Policy Institute of California survey, released Sunday, showed 53 percent of voters supporting a recall, down 5 percentage points from the institute's previous poll taken in August.
That was good news for Davis, analysts agreed. But they were uncertain whether the governor could continue to close the gap enough between now and Oct. 7, the recall election's scheduled date....

His [McClintock's] Passion Is Purely Fiscal (CA Recall)
LA Times ^ | September 21, 2003 | Paul Pringle
Posted on 09/21/2003 9:12 AM PDT by pogo101
Chris McClintock traces her son's twin penchants for politics and penny wisdom to age 8. The third-grader wanted to ride the bus to presidential candidate Barry Goldwater's campaign office near the family home in White Plains, N.Y.
"He was really into the whole concept of government," McClintock said, her eyes welling with pride. "He loved it."
Young Tom McClintock didn't have to ask his parents for the bus fare. He had it stashed in his piggy bank. So off he went.
Thirty-nine years later, he is a state senator on the ride of his life, running for governor in California's Oct. 7 recall election. The Thousand Oaks Republican bills himself as the thriftiest politician in the race the unequaled enemy of a bloated bureaucracy and a "taxpayers' advocate" loath to dip into the state's piggy bank....

New Schwarzenegger visa issue (bricklaying w/o a license)
Mercury News ^ | 9/21/03 | Dion Nissenbaum
Posted on 09/21/2003 12:13 PM PDT by NormsRevenge
SACRAMENTO - In a bid to win over Latino voters in the turbulent recall race, Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger began running a Spanish-language radio ad last week that touts his humble beginnings in America as a bricklayer.
While the Austrian native has made his immigrant's tale a rallying cry in his bid for governor, seven immigration attorneys said the up-and-coming bodybuilder most likely violated the terms of his work visa by launching his bricklaying business in 1971.
In interviews over the years, Schwarzenegger has said he joined forces with an Italian bodybuilder to rebuild damaged homes after the deadly Sylmar earthquake jolted Southern California.
But immigration attorneys across the country said Schwarzenegger would have been barred by visa restrictions from starting his own business. Moreover, there is no record that the pair ever received the required state contractor's license....

GOP'd Rather Be Right Than In Office
The Los Angeles Daily News ^ | September 20, 2003 | Thomas D. Elias
Posted on 09/21/2003 2:14 PM PDT by quidnunc
There's a reason why California Republicans can't unite behind a single candidate even when that candidate has a decent chance of winning: Many of them feel they'd rather be right than vote for a winner.
That's what's happening now, as most opinion polls show Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger could win the ongoing race to replace a recalled Gov. Gray Davis if he were the only major Republican left in the race. The same polls indicate Ventura County state Sen. Tom McClintock, No. 3 in the polls, most likely cannot win....

Schwarzenegger's strategic mistakes
SteveH | 9/21/03 | SteveH
Posted on 09/21/2003 2:53 PM PDT by SteveH
This is a pessimistic view of the California recall election from the conservative point of view.
Schwarzenegger made a number of huge strategic blunders in the California recall election. I surmise he is getting RINO advice from his RINO Quackenbush country club advisors. They probably told him to swing left early and bridge the gender gap. They probably told him not to bother consolidating support in his own party before swinging left, because more conservative politicians did not have his star power popularity and because they could never win in a liberal state. The conservatives would all be forced to follow Arnold when his strategy was revealed to succeed at the statewide level in the polls, and slowly but surely, conservative challengers (almost all of whom had already declared by the time Arnold entered the race) would be forced to step aside....
