My husband and I are planning our future and we definitely want out of California. We're looking at either Northern Arizona or Nevada. Any comments or suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated! It's GOTTA be better than California!!!!

You've got to go farther than those two states. Fairbanks, Alaska is beautiful in July.

Northern Arizona is lovely, and less expensive. Nevada (the Las Vegas or Reno areas) is more expensive, but offers more in teh way of events and social amenities. It all depends on your lifestyle; if night-lfe is a big issue for you, I would say Nevada. If you are looking for something more peaceful and laid-back, come to Arizona.

My wife, son and I escaped from Marin County this past June and bought a place in Sparks, NV. We love it up here! The taxes are low, the housing is affordable, and the economy is growing. Come on up!

I've lived in northern Arizona (near Sedona) for seven years. Without a doubt the best area of the country I've ever lived in. In a two-hour radius I've got lakes, low desert, high desert, canyons, snow-capped mountains, the darkest night skies, and horizons that go on forever. And to top it off, it's sparsely populated! Other than Flagstaff (college town) it's generally conservative.
Wages won't be what you're used to, but the quality-of-life is unbeatable (unless you really need big city life to thrive)

Our criteria for moving from California we used as a guide to find our new home:
1. Taxes
2. Weather
3. Churches
4. Hospital(s)/Medical Care
5. Community
6. Local Economy
7. Population
8. Crime
9. Recreation/Cultural//Lifestyle Interests
10. Internet Access
11. Notes of Interest (pros/cons of the area)
12. Politics
13. Restaurants/Entertainment/Fun Activities
14. Surrounding areas/states
15. Traditional slow-growth/no-growth area

So what areas did you look at and how did they score?
My wife has told me that she won't live where it snows and she doesn't have to tell me that she won't live where there are snakes.
I plan to have us look at south-west Utah and the hill country of Texas. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that both of these areas have snakes.

Thanks! We're considering a move from California also. I wish the charts factored in property, sales, vehicle, gasoline, and payroll taxes as well. Also, because of progressive tax rates they need 3 versions for low, medium, and high incomes. California is a wonderful place if you are poor: no taxes, free housing, health care. I imagine Texas is not the best state if you want to pursue a welfare lifestyle.

Keep in mind that Northern Nevada is a different world from Las Vegas. No income tax either way, but in the north (Reno area) you get Sierra skiing, camping, etc. Mild temps that are frosty but sunny all winter, and summer temps with a July and August high under 90 degrees (and cool at night.)
Property taxes are about 0.5% of value (more in Reno).
Sales tax is about 7%, but not on most mail order/Internet purchases.
Lots of people rave about Douglas County (Minden, Gardnerville), and it has a healthy economy.
Property values have gone up lots, just like Vegas, because there isn't much extra land to build on due to the feds owning 90% of the state. No real estate bargains, but one can indeed live cheap if you pick an unfashionable areas an hour or more from Reno.

If she can stand a few 6-inch snowfalls per year, each of which melts in the next few days of sun, then Reno and environs should be attractive.

We visited your area a few years back.
Breathtakingly beautiful.

Wyoming. No income tax, corporate tax or cap gains. Plus, you can wear you're gun around town.
