A woman member of Iraq's Governing Council has been shot and seriously wounded.
Akila al-Hashim was hit twice in the stomach, once in the shoulder and once in the leg outside her home in western Baghdad.
Ms Hashimi is in a serious condition at an American military hospital after undergoing surgery.
Iraqi officials say at least one and possibly more people have been arrested in connection with the attack.
Akila al-Hashim was a member of President Saddam Hussein's ousted Baathist, held a senior position in the Iraqi Foreign Ministry and was considered to be a protégée of former deputy foreign minster Tariq Aziz.
Head of the US-administration Paul Bremer described the attack on Akila al-Hashimi as an horrific and cowardly act, but said members of the Governing Council would not be deterred from their goal of building a new, democratic Iraq.
One man has been arrested over the attack, which also injured her bodyguard and at least one other companion.
Ms Hashimi is one of three women on the Iraqi Governing Council and has been involved in lobbying for international recognition of the US appointed body.
The US puppet government will come under increasing attack.

I could have cared less about Saddam. He was a two bit dictator the likes of which we have seen so many times before. The administration hyped him into so sort of threat to world peace and America -- created are real 'evil-doer" in order to fear monger the terrorist threat to the public. America needs bad guys for the old Washington two step. No no let's not talk about the economy or the trade deficit or the thousands of illegals crossing our borders, let's talk about all those evil-doers who really really really hate us. Bubba did the same thing except that all needed to do was blow up an aspirin factory because he had a good economy.
