Tom McClintock - The conscience of a conservative?
MensNewsDaily ^ | Sept. 19, 2003 | Bob Chandra

Posted on 09/19/2003 8:56:57 PM PDT by FairOpinion

In recent days, Tom McClintock, the "other Republican" in California's recall race, has accepted a million dollars spent on his behalf by a left-wing special interest group. He has claimed that a Democrat victory in the recall election would be desirable, as it would better his chances in 2006. And he has joined with Democrat Cruz Bustamante in a boycott against fellow Republican, Arnold Schwarzenegger. This is the man we're supposed to believe represents the conscience of conservatism? At the end of the day, Tom McClintock's Faustian Pact with the Left has made one thing clear - it's all about Tom McClintock.

The $1 million to be spent on McClintock's behalf is by Indian gambling interests, a staunch Democratic special interest. I wrote about the possibility of left-wing special interests backing McClintock in order to divide Republicans several weeks back. Now it is a reality. The Sacramento Bee has announced that the Morongo tribe is spending $1 million to boost McClintock's candidacy and it's not because they want him to win. The money spent on McClintock is meant to split the Republican vote so their loyal servant, Democrat Cruz Bustamante, can emerge the winner. With enough left- wing money, McClintock can steal enough votes from Arnold to make that happen. Tom's win-at-any-cost mindset has him collaborating with leftist groups who want nothing more than a divided Right to throw the election to Bustamante. Does McClintock see that the Left is using him? Maybe there's a reason it's called "blind" ambition.

McClintock's partnership with the liberal special interests raises serious questions about his loyalty to the GOP. McClintock has said he puts his personal "principles" before the party. But there's a deeper reason McClintock doesn't care that his spoiler candidacy will doom Republicans in the recall race.

In a conversation with US Congressman Dan Burton, Tom McClintock said the following: he (McClintock) didn't mind it if Democrats win the gubernatorial race because it could improve his own chances in 2006. According to the Los Angeles Times, "Burton, one of the more conservative members of Congress, also said McClintock had seemed to suggest that it would be acceptable for a Democrat to hold the governor's office, because he might create a clamor for a Republican in 2006.". So that's what this is really about. If McClintock can't win, he can at least prevent the Republicans from winning so he has a better shot in 2006. Aren't we glad he's playing for our team?

McClintock is now collaborating with Cruz Bustamante to boycott the California Broadcasters Association's debate on the 24th as a means of showing up Arnold Schwarzenegger. Bustamante led the boycott charge on October 17th with McClintock soon followed his lead. When you see a Republican siding with a Democrat against a fellow Republican, you know something is wrong with the picture. Don't adjust your set- this is Tom McClintock, the self-styled conscience of conservatism.

As if things couldn't get any worse, McClintock is justifying his candidacy on a poll strategically conducted by the left-wing Los Angeles Times, which wants nothing more than to keep him in the race. That Times' poll has been debunked by Field and even invalidated by the Times' own reporting. It added 6% more self-identified conservatives than other polls and naturally gave McClintock an artificial 5% bump. But McClintock is clinging to this cooked poll, another leftist ploy, because it serves his interests.

What kind of a conservative lets left-wing interests drive his candidacy like this? The answer is a candidate who is so blind with ambition that he does not see how the Left is using him to their own ends. Thus far, McClintock has claimed he stands for principle, but it is obvious that his hopeless candidacy is based on personal ambition. It's no longer appropriate to view McClintock as merely a misguided crusader. He is a bigger threat to Republican victory on Election Day than Cruz Bustamante. Up until now, McClintock has responded to arguments for stepping aside with denial, delusion, and arrogance. Given his collaboration with the Left, Republicans must get serious with him. McClintock's "stalking horse" candidacy must come to an end.

I, too, would rather see Bustamante win rather than Schwarzenkennedy. Reason? Bustamante will serve to UNITE Republicans. Schwarzenkennedy will DESTROY the CA GOP (just like Pete Wilson did). Remember?! Go, McClintock!! www.helptom.com

God help California if you get Cruz. Hard to believe you'd enjoy that. You REALLY would LIKE to see Cruz represent you as Governor instead of Arnold, huh ? Wow !!!

Glad I live in Texas, more now that EVER !! :O)

I would NEVER vote for a Democrat, which is what you'll get when you vote for McClintock. I guess we just see things differently. (I feel like I learned my lesson in 1992 with Perot being the spoiler, and getting clintoon elected).

Thinking out loud now ...

I wonder how much having Cruz for Governor will hurt Dubya in the 2004 election versus having Arnold ?? Maybe none, I don't know. I hope it doesn't matter. I'd hate for McClintock to be responsible for getting Bush OUT and ANY of the 'RATS on the current list elected to the White House ...

And doesn't it make you wonder when McClintock is getting favorable
support from LEFTISTS so that will help MeCHA Man get elected ????

I'll be heading over to the rally in a couple of hours from now!

To all Arnold Supporters in San Diego,

THE SAN DIEGO ACTION GROUP FOR ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER NEEDS YOUR HELP! We are looking for as many interested volunteers as we can get to join us at a staging point and to walk over to the McClintock rally. We want to make Arnold's presence in San Diego known to McClintock. The rally will be held at the McClellan Buick Pontiac GMC at 3:00pm in Lemon Grove. Radio talk show host, Roger Hedgecock, will be broadcasting live from the rally and other media will be present.

The staging point will be at the parking lot of Assemblywoman Shirley Horton's campaign office at 7227 Broadway, Suite 201 in Lemon Grove. We ask that you arrive at 2pm, please arrive no later than 2:30p. We will walk over to the rally at 2:45p. We recommend that you wear comfortable shoes because of the short walk. We are looking for volunteers to arrive early and help us create signs and assist us with the volunteers arriving afterwards. Below is a map to the staging area. You can use mapquest or another map locator to get directions.

7227 Broadway Lemon Grove, CA 91945

Please feel free to bring any Arnold campaign signs, buttons, pins, etc., that you already have. We will have some material available to pass out to volunteers. Material could be limited depending on the size of the crowd.

Are you honestly ignorant of how the Legislature works, or are you simply being disingenuous.

What next, blaming Newt Gingrich for Clinton's scandals?

The author of the posted article claimed that McClintock was "boycotting Arnold." I proved that statement was false. McClintock negotiated with the sponsors of the debate in an effort to make it less scripted and more informative. And he won. So did the voters.

McClintock never breathed a word about "boycotting" anybody. That was a complete lie.

End of story.

"Show me where he said he was ashamed to be a Republican, period, unqualified. I don't think he ever did."
__________________________________________________________________

He said so in an interview published in the November, 1999 issue of George Magazine. He is quoted here by George Neumayr:

In an interview with George magazine, he expressed disgust with the Republicans who impeached Clinton. "That was another thing I will never forgive the Republican Party for," he said. "We spent one year wasting time because there was a human failure. I was ashamed to call myself a Republican during that period."
Please note: He did not say he was "almost ashamed." He did not say he was "somewhat ashamed." What he did say was that he was ashamed of being a Republican for that entire year.

Schwarzenegger was also widely quoted in the mainstream media. Thomas Roeser in the Chicago Sun-Times:

As the conservative publication Human Events recalls, he had spoken out against the GOP in November 1999, almost a year after the Republican-controlled House impeached Bill Clinton for perjury and obstruction of justice. Interviewed in George, the magazine edited by John F. Kennedy Jr., cousin of Schwarzenegger's wife, Maria Shriver, the body builder-actor declared he was deeply angered with the GOP's action against Clinton. ''That was another thing I will never forgive the Republican Party for,'' he said. ''We spent one year wasting time because there was a human failure. I was ashamed to call myself a Republican during that period. Instead of devoting all this energy and all those hearings to how we're going to solve the problems of inner cities . . . No, it's like 'This man has to be removed from office because he's a national threat.' Yeah, that's a good one.''
Schwarzenegger has no problem with a president who committs perjury and obstructs justice. And he makes it clear that he resents anybody who does have a problem with such crimes.

here's what I am referring to... more specifically.
We are going to run these folks with this overly "ideological" and "self righteous blindered principle -ism" attitude OUT of the republican party... and I actually don't believe YOU are one of them... but perhaps you are.

They are all former keyesters and brigadiers... with the exception of a few that HARD RIGHT libertarians... many are formerly banned anti-conservative "retreads" who called bush a baby killer over the stem cell decision...

It will become necessary for some conservatives to moderate, or consider joining their "anti bush" ranks... before next november.

Do you happen to know him personally? Just curious.

I hope for the sake of your state that Arnold is not a pig in a poke.

So, I was right. He never said he was ashamed to be a Republican, period, unqualified.

Thank you for your hard work.

Of course, I totally disagree with his statement about impeachment, and am appalled at his having said that, can't imagine why he would.

But he never is reported as having said he was ashamed to be a Republican, period, unqualified.

By contrast, he has often and loudly said he was proud to be a Republican, even in an industry that loathes Republicans.

Go, Arnold!

Your efforts are admirable, but AS supporters don't listen to facts.

However, many of the lurkers in this forum have seen the truth
about Arnold's campaign supporters after reading posts such as yours.

Keep up the search for truth! IMO, it does make a difference.

Not true. He didnt negotiate. The rules stayed the same. Mr Know it All, McCLinon didnt understand the rules or was just gaming the system with his buddy Bustamante to show Arnold that he could be a pain in the ass.

McClintock never breathed a word about "boycotting" anybody. That was a complete lie.

So why did all the newspapers say that? Did they all make it up or did McClinton get bamboozled by joining at the hip with Bustamante? Or is he just lying now that he found out conservatives werent too happy about him taking Indian money and helping the Dem candidate win...but then he's got what 20 years in the legislature serving as road kill.

I agree...they did not elect themselves, but they certainly were not put in office by the majority of small business owners. I hate to see so many brothers & sisters go out of business.

The small business owners of California might want to consider an exodus. Take your money and your jobs to Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, Florida. Let Sacramento answer for the budget shortfall then.

It's not easy, I know. I understand how much work, saving and planning it requires to relocate. I'm halfway through a two-year plan to get out myself. I imagine a tenfold effort is required of a small business owner. But what's the alternative? We're on a sinking ship. And Arnold can't save it, because Arnold rejects the only thing that can save it: radical right-wing extremism, a.k.a. conservatism. Liberalizing the state GOP in the interest of Victory is short-sighted and foolish.

Arnold's compromised brand of Republicanism cannot and will not fix anything. And when it fails, California will revert to its leftist ways, with a vengeance.

McClintock isn't winning anything, I understand that. Political reality is political reality. It's either Arnold, Busta or Gray. None of the above can fix what ails CA. The one benefit of an Arnold victory is the short-term economic fix that will enable more Californians to get out of dodge before the imminent collapse. That's the only reason I'm voting for Schwarzenegger, no matter how hard his supporters try to convince me not to. For the sake of the people who can see the writing on the wall.

Tom is always talking about being this great leader and what he is goign to do when he gets to Sacramento. What has he done there in the last twenty years. Name anything he got passed that was the least bit controverial. After serving as road kill for twenty years he is going to magically be able to ram his program through the legislature? What planet are you? Or better yet, what are you smoking? Are you sure you arent one of them libertarians?

Schwarzenkennedy could NOT win in a Republican primary

If that is true then it must say a lot about McClinton. Schwartzenneger has more than twice the number of Republicans planning to vote for him as McClinton.

The idea that they are willing to let California DIE because it will be blamed on the democrats sometime in the future? Their nonchalance about how this will impact families, marriages and children of GOOD people living in this state? On a political level, we are seeing Dr. Mengele's attitude at work...

But you dont understand. Their brand of "Conservatism" is based on just saying NO. They dont want and perceive the necessity of governing as something "dirty" that they want to avoid. As a result, its not surprising that they dont seem to have many chances to govern...but can they debate all the issues and demonstrate their brilliance. They keep bemoaning the fact that if only the unenlightened ones would discover their brilliance, things would be great.
