Once Upon A Time In Mexico

Posted on 09/19/2003 5:40:23 AM PDT by pjd

I couldn't find a thread about this recent movie but I had the impression that many of you would boycot it because it features Johnny Depp.

Well, Johnny Depp aside, the movie actually has a theme which I believe would be very dear to most here at FR so you may want to reconsider (If it's still playing in your area.)

The underlying theme of the movie is freedom, patriotism (for Mexico, in this case,) and why it is important for the people to keep and bear arms. In the movie, corrupt politicos use the Mexican Army in an attempted coup, but the very well armed citizens fight back and defeat the army and quash the coup. It was magnificent.

I would recomend you give this great movie about patriotism a chance.

We already know how important freedom and the second amendment is without spending 7 bucks to see two commies making a buck off the ideal.

Hi,

I know, I know. Some of you don't like the Swiss. But when you are thinking about a watch think about the Rolex day-date. It's a great watch!

Thinking about changing your oil? Many people don't like the oil companies. But next time you change your vehicle's oil please use Mobile 1. /s-casm end

I suppose all movies have at least two commies making a buck off the deal. Suit yourself.

The theme of bearing arms is good --- a movie about the escalating very violent crime --- kidnappings, extortions, burglaries, robberies, rape, murder would be true-to-life in Mexico. The theme of saving their very corrupt government would be a little absurd though --- they really kind of need an overthrow of that government. Much of the problem in Mexico is they actually elect their politicians and they'll elect similar types here --- like Bustamante who wants to nationalize everything.

I'd recommend Once Upon a Time in Mexico to anyone that wants to waste two hours of their life. It was actually worse than Desperado, and that's saying a lot. I had to watch it because some friends were in town and wanted to see it. Mindless gunplay, terrible dialogue, convoluted plot - it had it all!

I'll wait till it comes to video, where I can rent it for 99 cents. Less of my money going to the Hollywood elitist.

I saw the movie this past week - I had not seen Desperado so I didn't know anything about this movie before going and personally I rarely boycott anything. However, the movie reinforces the socialist fairy tale that most hollywierd movies like to portray. The military is the bad guys and are in bed with the cartels. The president is weak and uncertain because his own staff are in league with the bad guys and the only redeeming quality of the president is his love for the people. Johnny Depp plays a conniving CIA agent who is manipulating everyone against everyone else with the intent of facilitating the overthrow of the current government. The movie's heros are 'the people' who overthrow the corrupt military and once Johnny Depp's 'eyes are opened' he see's the light and helps out too.

Sorry - I enjoyed the movie and its complicated plot but I got more of the impression that this was a typical hollywood celebration of socialism. I could be wrong. :-)

lol...man..its hard to get a break on here sometimes isn't it.

I know you were just trying to reccomend a movie you enjoyed. And thanks for that. I will probably check it out this week-end. I have no trouble seperating movie fantasy from real life.

It seems that some on here are ready to jump on any and everything possible to flame.

What you say is true, but the movie takes place in a ficticious Mexico in which the Presidente is an honerable man.

I think you are wrong about that. I could be wrong to, but the theme was summed up pretty well at the very end when Hayek asks Bandero, "What do you want in life?" He replies, "Freedom." She says, "Oh, simple." He says,"No."

Freedom is not free, or easy was the message and the reason I like it.

That would be pretty ficticious. Unfortunately there isn't a Latin American country where they could really make a movie of an honorable leader --- I may watch the movie though --- I haven't seen it. I might watch the Pancho Villa one too --- but I actually prefer Mexican movies that the Mexicans make if I'm going to watch movies about Mexico. They have some funny and some good ones. The Almada brothers make some good westerns.
