Former Boy Scout scout master arrested for rape of boy in troop

GAINESVILLE, Fla. A former scout master with the Boy Scouts of America who also worked for the state's child welfare agency was arrested on charges of raping a boy in his troop.

Hugh Eric Self, 35, was charged with sexually abusing the child, now 12, several times between November 2002 and July of this year, Alachua County Sheriff's Sgt. Keith Faulk said.

Self was being held in the Alachua County jail without bond on Saturday, the day after his arrest.

According to the arrest report, Self met the boy when the boy was 8, through scouting events and later had him in his scout troop. The child told authorities he didn't report the abuse earlier because Self had threatened him and he was afraid Self would kidnap him.

Self recently quit as scout master and will be suspended from the organization, said John Reesor, scout executive for the North Florida Council.

Boy Scouts are educated about sexual abuse issues when being oriented into the group, Reesor said. There are also policies to prevent abuse, such as having two adults present at scouting activities and having children sleep in tents with other children, he said.

Self is employed by the Department of Children & Families as a public assistance caseworker, said Tom Barnes, Alachua County DCF spokesman. Self didn't work with children, but DCF officials moved him to the personnel office at Tacachale when they learned of the sheriff's investigation, Barnes said.

And it is also a fact that the reason the boy scouts have had so much problem with homosexual scout leaders is the access the group provides to such predators just like the priesthood and boys clubs provide enormous buffet tables for the predatory appetites.

Until he is convicted the Council will have him in a suspension status. After conviction he will be officially tossed and his name tagged so as to never again be a registered Adult Scout Volunteer. In the mean time you can bet that the paid professional Scouters and the unit committee chairperson and the chartering organization representative who were supposed to check out Self's background will all undergo some grilling.

But hey at least they take some action and start the procedures in full public light.

Since the boy was 8 when Self started up on him he was a Cub Scout at the Bobcat rank in what is called a Cub Scout Pack.

Since the boy was 12 when the incident was reported the boy had worked his way up through to most likely WEBELOS/Arrow of Light before he Bridged over to Boy Scouts and the Scout Troop for boys 12 - 18.

As the evidence comes out and other boys come forward this is not going to be pretty for Self or the Boy Scout program. At least the Scouts try to prevent these things and are up front about such things; taking actions when such terrible acts are found out.

Actually I had to do a report on this subject. Gender matters little in the mind of most pedophiles, it's opportunity. If this perv could have been a girl scout troup leader it could have been a little girl that he molested (replace girl scout with 4H, camp counselor, etc). It's pretty sick either way.

What on Earth do you mean? According to the American Heritage Dictonary, pedophilia is The act or fantasy on the part of an adult of engaging in sexual activity with a child or children.. I said people who engage in such activity are deranged perverts. How is that watering anything down? How does that dumb anything down? How does that suggest we should lower the age of consent?

Pedophilia, which is the general term for acts of child molestation committed by adults, is utterly despicable. What could be clearer or more definitive than that? Pedophiles should be permanently excluded from the general population.

The primary reason to consider alternatives to the death penalty is that an automatic death penalty would create a strong incentive to kill the children to eliminate witnesses. Another reason (if you're into compassion) is that many adult pedophiles were themselves victims as children (which is NOT a reason to let them run free).
