Bill and Hillary line up behind Wesley Clark.

Thursday, September 18, 2003 12:01 a.m.

The Democratic presidential campaign has been a bust so far. After nearly a year of campaigning, the only one of the nine announced candidates to catch fire has been Howard Dean, whom party leaders deride as too liberal and too error-prone to beat President Bush. That explains the extraordinary welcome that many Democrats yesterday gave Wesley Clark's announcement that he was joining the presidential race.

I just loved it when Clark talked about the 5 trillion dollar surplus.Wow! I must have missed that one. He out did Sheila Lee Jackson. Her surplus was only 4 trillion.

Good summary of the situation except for leaving out the option for Hillary to have an intact campaign staff to take over should circumstance cause her to decide to run for president this time around. Clark can then be VP or, if that's too obvious, Sec of Defense or State.

Hope Clark has enough sense to hire his own bodyguards.

you'r right .... I think Fund is saying just that about the in place staff ,,, though between the lines

Lehane may have been a trojan horse in Kerry's campaign and if he settles in this rat's nest it will show that Weasely Clark is more of a puppet than Booze Cruzamonte

I guess John Fund did not hear bjclinton saying that the "republicans" in northern New York were telling Hillary that they would not hold her to her being a six year senator.

The general seems more like the "stealth" in a not-so "stealth" entrance of Hillary into this campaign of 2004, whether it be for the presidency or vice-presidency.

These two must be getting a lot of pressure from their fellow travelers around the world for their inability to protect their money flow from "Stalin-like" dictators.

Why is the groomed from infancy former VP algore being soooooo out of sight?

Clark is the Peronist candidate.

The significance of this event is the Xlinton's rejection of the nine dwarves. This means the RAT future belongs to Xlinton, or nobody.

I think Clark is being groomed for VP for Hillary in 2008. I agree with the assertion that the Clnton's are sabotaging the democrats in 2004. I think they are trying to build up an unbeatable (in their minds) ticket of Hillary-Clark for 2008.

Liberals are ALL Monica Lewinskys when it comes to the Clintons.

Did anyone see Newt Gingrich on Greta's FNC show last night? He said Clark is a formidable candidate and listed all his top-notch qualities.

To the extent that he succeeds, the Clintons will see their already substantial influence in the Democratic Party grow.

And to the extent that he does not succeed? (I just do not see Clark doing well in RAT primaries.)

...and Wes makes ten. The Democratic Crime Syndicates candidates are like tenpins. I envision a cartoon of President Bush at a bowling alley rolling a strike.

By slyly letting everyone know that Hillary's fortunes are tied to Clark's, the Clintons will attract votes to him from the robotic Hillary lover crowd, without running the risk that she actually runs on her own and loses. This is a cowardly, cynical way to partner with Clark, perhaps become VP, but otherwise suffer no downside risk. Or, if Clark is doing well, and he suddenly suffers some medical crisis, Hillary steps in out of a sense of "duty" and runs in his place.

The last Fund point is key: with so many old Clinton hands surrounding him, don't be surprised if Mr. Clinton is occasionally tempted to act as if he were still Mr. Clark's commander-in-chief.

Say . . . some disease or poisoning normally associated with one of the heavier metals?

I agree that the Clintons can not allow a Dem to win in 04. This is clearly a stop Dean effort. The Clintons want a Dem to lose in 04 but not so badly that it injures the party so that it is so weaken in 04 that it cannot win in 08. We have not seen the last of the Clintons in the this Dem primary race. They want every body to know they are still relevent and should not be taken for granted. They will not sit on the sidelines and accept what ever comes along.
