Hello All

I've been following this thread all day and wish the best for yall.

And this crisis has reminded me once again, that I must make up an emergency box for my daughter and her family. They have a basement, thank goodness. But, with three children under five years old, they need a lot of stuff, even if only for a few hours.

After our last tornado here in rural Missouri, you'd think that they would have one handy by now....but nooooo, they procrastinate.

So, I am thinking of a list now, and wish your input.

So far:

battery flashlights and lanterns
small radio with fresh batteries
small butane stove coil
bottled water
diapers, pullups and wipes
dry beverage mixes
peanut butter
crackers
instant soups
rainwear
over the counter medications

Around the 9/11, terrorist threat, sniper episode we endured here in the Washington area, many of us put together 72 hour kits for our families. Each member of my family now has a backpack filled as follows:

Day #1: 2280 calories $8.00
Breakfast - Poptart, Granola, Vienna sausage (730 calories $1.75)
Lunch - Mac & Cheese, Fruit Rollup, Apple Sauce, Raisins (500 calories $2.25)
Dinner - Canned Stew, P-nut butter crackers, Fruit Cup (450 calories $2.75)
Snacks - Salted Peanuts, hard candy, gum (600 calories $1.25)

Day #2: 2640 calories $8.50
Breakfast - Poptart, Granola, Fruit Cup (660 calories $1.35)
Lunch - Tuna/crackers, Fruit Rollup, Apple Sauce, Raisins (520 calories $2.90)
Dinner - Spam, P-nut butter crackers, Fruit Cup (1210 calories $2.75)
Snacks - Fruit Rollup, hard candy, gum (250 calories $1.50)

Day #3: 2130 calories $6.00
Breakfast - Poptart, Granola, Dried Fruit (660 calories $1.30)
Lunch - Spagettios, Fruit Rollup, Apple Sauce, Raisins (460 calories $2.00)
Dinner - Pork & Beans, P-nut butter crackers, Fruit Cup (410 calories $1.45)
Snacks - Sunflower Seeds, hard candy, gum (600 calories $1.25)

The proportions are in small individual servings with pull-top lids so that no can openers are necessary.

Also packed individual first aid kits in each backpack containing:

1 softpack bag
1 first aid guide
1 1/2" x 5 yd. first aid tape roll
1 scissors
1 medium safety pins
1 6" x 3/4" finger splints
10 3/4" x 3" adhesive plastic bandages
1 2" x 4" elbow & knee plastic bandages
5 3/8" x 1-1/2" junior plastic bandages
1 knuckle fabric bandages
1 large fingertip fabric bandages
1 large butterfly wound closures
6 alcohol cleansing wipes
6 antiseptic cleansing wipes (sting free)
1 insect sting relief pads
2 soap towelettes
2 antibiotic ointment packs
2 2" x 2" gauze dressing pads
2 4" x 4" gauze dressing pads
2 ibuprofen tablets
2 decongestant tablets
2 extra-strength non-aspirin tablets

Also packed a flashlight, pair of socks, poncho in each backpack as I remember... It's probably time to rotate. Fortunately, we never used them.

On another note -- the rain is now torrential.
