I got my sample ballot yesterday. For those who don't know, because of the multitude of candidates on the recall question number 2, the order of the alphabetical groupings were drawn at random. The letters are then rotated in different counties to give each letter and candidate a somewhat equal shot.
When my ballot arrived, I opened it and turned to the page depicting the actual ballot. I chuckled at the sheer sight of 135 candidates dwarfing the recall question number 1 and the two ballot measures. Then I saw the candidate that was listed first on the Orange County ballot, Cruz Bustamante. I thought to myself how lucky for Cruz to be elevated to the top spot in one of the state's largest counties population-wise.
Then it struck me, did this mean the letter B was the first in the alphabet for this county? Well, actually no. The letter B is actually the last one grouped on the battot. Because of space contraints, only two candidates, Bustamante and Cheryl Bly-Chester (Republican- Businesswoman/Environmental Engineer), made it to the top, the rest of the nine B candidates are listed dead last. How extremely fortunate for Cruz to win the candidate lottery and be listed number one.
I would imagine the graphic arts department in the Secretary of State's office worked all night to try to fit those last two B names down there with all of the rest, but just couldn't pull it off.
As for the rest of the candidates, the letter S is listed second which puts Schwarzenegger at number six overall, between Lawrence Steven Strauss (Democrat- Lawyer/Businessperson Student) and George B. Schwartzman (Independent- Businessman). The letter M drew the number 22 spot and Tom McClintock is about halfway down in the third column, wedged between Bob McClain (Independent- Civil Engineer) and Jonathan Miller (Democrat- Small Business Owner).
As for Arianna....still searching.
My new favorite candidate (that I can talk about in mixed company, sorry Mary Carey) is Kurt E. "Tachikaze" Rightmeyer (Independent- Middleweigh Sumo Wrestler). Now there's somebody who could control Jackie Goldberg.
Even the normally apolitical Mrs. Fierro was intrigued by the sumomatori's candidacy.
Cruz #11, Arnold #17, and McClintock way, waaaay at the bottom of page 6 (almost the end of the ballot).
