Pancakes on Wednesdays

Heidi.

Welcome to Pancakes on Wednesdays.

Wednesday September 17, 2003

Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data.

Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks.

We have links, lots of them.

Look it up!

“I do not know where family doctors acquired illegibly perplexing handwriting; nevertheless, extraordinary pharmaceutical intellectuality, counterbalancing in-decipherability, transcendentalises intercommunications’ incompre-hensibleness”
RHOPALIC        IPA pronunciation

Of text in which each word contains one more letter or syllable than the one preceding it.

This word derives from the Greek rhopalos, for a club or cudgel which, like most of its kind, is thicker towards one end than the other. Though the English word is first recorded only at the end of the seventeenth century, the technique is almost certainly much older. It is commonly applied to poetry whose words advance each time by one syllable, or sometimes one foot, but it can also apply to prose. The classic example of the latter form was created by Dmitri Borgmann: “I do not know where family doctors acquired illegibly perplexing handwriting; nevertheless, extraordinary pharmaceutical intellectuality, counterbalancing in-decipherability, transcendentalises intercommunications’ incompre-hensibleness”, which manages the difficult feat of reaching a word of twenty letters. (David Crystal, who quotes this in his book Language Play, remarks: “It would be ultraconscientiousness to go further”. Even overintellectualisation, perhaps.) In poetry, such wordplay has also been described as snowball verse and wedge verse.

Pancakes are what we do on Wednesdays.Buttermilk Chocolate Chip Pancakes. Nothing fancy here - just buttermilk pancakes with chocolate chips. While it might not be the most intricate recipe, it's delicious, especially, if you like chocolate (and who doesn't?).

Rita Rudner 1956

"Someday I want to be rich. Some people get so rich they lose all respect for humanity. That's how rich I want to be."

I could use about a hundred dollars.

I love being married. It's so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life

1983 - Vanessa Williams, as Miss New York, became the first black woman to be crowned Miss America.

I love pancakes on Wednesdays.

A man went to the doctor with a really bad infection. The doctor informed him he had Aids with just about every kind of infection there is to go along with it. The patient asked the doc what they were going to do for him. The doc answered that he was going to put him on a diet. "A diet! What kind of diet?" questioned the patient. "Pizza & pancakes," answered the doc. "Pizza and pancakes! Will that help?" queried the patient. The doctor replied: "I don't know, but it's the only thing we know of that we can slide under the door to you."

1778 - The United States signed its first treaty with a Native American tribe, the Delaware Nation.

Native American pancakes are the very best

1787 - The Constitution of the United States of America was signed by delegates at the Constitutional Convention. The U.S. Constitution is the oldest working Constitution in the world.

1862 - The Battle of Antietam took place during the American Civil War. More than 23,000 men were killed, wounded, or missing. The Rebel advance was ended with heavy losses to both armies.

Pancakes are the cornerstone of a nutritious breakfast.

It is shown how, within the framework of general relativity and without the introduction of wormholes, it is possible to modify a spacetime in a way that allows a spaceship to travel with an arbitrarily large speed. By a purely local expansion of spacetime behind the spaceship and an opposite contraction in front of it, motion faster than the speed of light as seen by observers outside the disturbed region is possible. The resulting distortion is reminiscent of the ``warp drive'' of science fiction. However, just as it happens with wormholes, exotic matter will be needed in order to generate a distortion of spacetime like the one discussed here.

Design your own pancake syrup, but keep it on the right.

1939 - The Soviet Union invaded Poland. Germany had invaded Poland on September 1.

Below is an animated proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. Starting with a right triangle and squares on each side, the middle size square is cut into congruent quadrilaterals (the cuts through the center and parallel to the sides of the biggest square). Then the quadrilaterals are hinged and rotated and shifted to the big square. Finally the smallest square is translated to cover the remaining middle part of the biggest square. A perfect fit! Thus the sum of the squares on the smaller two sides equals the square on the biggest side

1983 - Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox broke Hank Aaron's major league record for games played when he started his 3,299th game.

SARGE IS STILL HERE...

...until he blows away.

Probably won't happen here at The Bunker in Kentucky, though.

We're watching the storm at this hour. Several state shave begged us for help; we've got civilian help going to North Carolina; Maryland and PA have asked for our search and rescue folks; and the MARS Radio network is watching the highlands for rainfall and wind damage.

The next three nights will be busy shifts for me. I'm pulling six straight nights to work through the weather event.

Keep safe, my FRiends in harm's way...
