As you know Maggie, my memories of Fla. go back to when the population was scarce. I was in Miami when the city reached one million people. How many people there today? I guess it would surprise most to hear that the thing I miss the most about Fla. is the storms. I loved the fierce electric storms that rolled in so suddenly with the booming thunder, bolts of lightning, flash flooding and in thirty minutes the sun was shining and the ground steaming. It was so dramatic.

Thanks for the backup, Brother Joe!!
Saw that about the Cracker Cattle, but I already had said a mouthful..:))
Including the fact THE BIGGEST RANCH in America is in Florida - NOT Texas!

"We need some Ruby Red grapefruit"When my brother and his family lived in Florida, they had a grapefruit tree in the back yard. I thought it was great to pick a grapefruit from the tree in the morning for breakfast. They weren't Ruby Red's, but they were good :-)

And my memories of Florida go back more than twenty years before you went there!
As a little girl, Joe and Cal and gunner, we used to take "Sunday drives in the country" to Miami Beach, before WWII.
There were a lot of homes on the Bay side, but the beach itself was developed only along about 12 blocks....would go across and stop right there to spend time swimming - then go WAY up to Baker's Haulover where boats went out into the ocean and returned to the Inland Waterway. Great fishing there.
The beach was all sand dunes and palmettos.

In the house to which we moved west of Melbourne, the previous owner had an acre of grove by the house with all manner of oranges and grapefruit and lemons, experimenting with grafting, etc.
The lemons produced were the size of small grapefruit, and made wonderful lemon meringue pies.
The grapefruit had really thick skins, making peeling easy.
We used to sit and peel the citrus and toss the peelings into a fire in the fireplace in the cooler months...cheap way to freshen the air and provide a pleasant aroma...

The BEST and sweetest Ruby Reds are grown along the Indian River in Florida, though...:))
Dansangel can verify that, living along it, too.

In the 1940's and 50's, we used to pick lemons and use the juice to rinse our hair clean and make it super soft and shiny...

>>>>. If you ever come down here, you'll note a procedure before you exit the plane. Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries officers board inbound flights when they connect with skybridges and they spray aerosol insecticides thru the aircraft cabin. People wonder what's going on and many think it's a joke, but it's serious business here.
Sounds lovely. I'm with Nan. If Hillary does get in somehow in 2004, I'm off to NZ! Go Blacks!

Care for a piece of pie :-) Another memory of mine...the only time I ever had Key Lime Pie was when I was in Florida. Grew up enjoying the Lemon Meringue Pie my Nana made. The best Lemon Meringue Pie :-)

I liked key lime pie better than lemon meringue.
Just watched Fox News Channel with Geraldo broadcasting from Morehead City, North Carolina on Isabel, expected to come ashore tomorrow near there.
If you go back to my Reply 233, Emerald Isle is on an island strip, about 25 miles west southwest from that location.
There is a heavy retired Marine Corps presence there, by the way, so close to Jacksonville, NC, and the Marine Base; plus being a family vacation type beach rather than the college crowd destination.
