In the house to which we moved west of Melbourne, the previous owner had an acre of grove by the house with all manner of oranges and grapefruit and lemons, experimenting with grafting, etc.
The lemons produced were the size of small grapefruit, and made wonderful lemon meringue pies.
The grapefruit had really thick skins, making peeling easy.

We used to sit and peel the citrus and toss the peelings into a fire in the fireplace in the cooler months...cheap way to freshen the air and provide a pleasant aroma...

In the 1940's and 50's, we used to pick lemons and use the juice to rinse our hair clean and make it super soft and shiny...
