U.S. Holding Six Americans, Two Britons in Iraq

  ABU GHRAIB, Iraq (AP) - The United States is holding in Iraq six prisoners who claim to be Americans and two who say they are Britons, the general in charge of detention centers said Tuesday.

Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski, commander of the 800th Military Police Brigade, said the eight were considered security detainees - those who attacked or helped carry out attacks against coalition troops - and were being interrogated by military intelligence.

Karpinski said they are being held at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison, 12 miles west of Baghdad, one of the most potent symbols of Saddam Hussein's regime.

She would not provide further details.

It was the first time the U.S. military has acknowledged the detention of Westerners in connection with attacks on American troops in Iraq.

The story' details are minimal--and I wonder if Centcom or the DoD will release their names. I have a feeling that they may not release their names right away, but I also have this feeling that in certain neighborhoods in the USA, there are search warrants in the process of being served and any number of people being questioned about their friends, relatives and neighbors.

To me, it's a stunning story--US citizens (or at least US residents) either were planning to or had carried out attacks to kill our own soldiers during wartime--not just one, like Jihad Johnny, but a half a dozen of them. And one has to wonder how many others there are out there.

So this does not come a surprise to me.

I was thinking of the Yemeni al Qaeda cell near Buffalo....and remembered seeing a story on them recently that said that five of the six were born in the US.

I do hope we find out more about them soon, but they may be keeping their IDs under wraps until every minute of their lives is investigated.

I also wonder if the two Brits had connections to that one-eyed, one-armed imam (Hamdi? It's something like that).

as a former ex-pat that spent many yrs in n& w africa and thru out the middle east, ive witnessed so many weird things there..a common saying among ex-pats is if we told folks back home how things realy are here they would say we were crazy.... but to me i have to say this one more time..either convert to islam, commit suicide or take a stand....this war will be going on for a long time and we must not fail....IMHO this is wwIII
