CNN's top war correspondent, Christiane Amanpour, says that the press muzzled itself during the Iraq war. And, she says CNN "was intimidated" by the Bush administration and Fox News, which "put a climate of fear and self-censorship."

As criticism of the war and its aftermath intensifies, Amanpour joins a chorus of journalists and pundits who charge that the media largely toed the Bush administrationline in covering the war and, by doing so, failed to aggressively question the motives behind the invasion.

From the headline I thought she was going to discuss CNN's refusal to broadcast any news about Saddam Hussein's atrocities when his evil regime was in power.

Fox News spokeswoman Irena Briganti said of Amanpour's comments: "Given the choice, it's better to be viewed as a foot soldier for Bush than a spokeswoman for al-Qaeda."

HAH.

"It's not a question of couldn't do it, it's a question of tone," Amanpour said. "It's a question of being rigorous. It's really a question of really asking the questions."

Gee, now tell me again what "questions" CNN asked of Bill Clinton during his 1999 air war against Serbia in Kosovo?

You know Amanpour, the war where Clinton didn't even **go** to the UN for "permission"!

Clarke also said she believes OBL is dead and that, re: saddam, "we have him".

She was referring to the question by the moderator as to what she expected the story line on Sadaam will be a YEAR FROM 911. She answered we have him. It caught me off guard until I put it into context of the question. We don't have him......soon I hope but not yet.

Hmmmmm....what about while Saddam was in power? Just a little bit of self-censorship to remain in Bagdad. It seems CNN is quite the toady of whoever gives them some type of perceived advantage. But we already knew that, didn't we?

Wasn't CNN the network that was a mouthpiece for Saddam by not reporting the atrocities before the war? Their news director had to come clean about not reporting events.

And the quote from Irea Briganti is just a gem! :)

Amanpour is a lap-bitch of totalitarian evil.

"Why have we given George W. Bush such an easy ride when-until now, that is-when actually his qualifications are questionable?"

The bugaboo of Fox News is seemingly real for these people. It's senseless, except that in reaction to criticism by viewers (pointing out their biases) all they can do is concoct some evil, larger force.

Brown then asked Amanpour if there was any story during the war that she couldn't report.

"It's not a question of couldn't do it, it's a question of tone," Amanpour said. "It's a question of being rigorous. It's really a question of really asking the questions. All of the entire body politic in my view, whether it's the administration, the intelligence, the journalists, whoever, did not ask enough questions, for instance, about weapons of mass destruction. I mean, it looks like this was disinformation at the highest levels."

Translation: War Slut didn't have her usual script in front of her.

Fox News spokeswoman Irena Briganti said of Amanpour's comments: "Given the choice, it's better to be viewed as a foot soldier for Bush than a spokeswoman for al-Qaeda."

Today's runaway favorite for the "When you say, 'Budweiser!', you've said it all" award.
