Springsteen Calls for Bush's Impeachment (9/15/03)

Aging rocker Bruce Springsteen added a little political spice to his Washington, D.C., concert at FedEx Field Saturday night when, according to concertgoer accounts, he called for President Bush's impeachment.

"It's time to impeach the president and get a man in there to get us out of this mess," the Boss allegedly roared, according to FreeRepublic.com's Kristinn Taylor, co-leader of the group's D.C. chapter.

Another concertgoer told an online Springsteen discussion group that Bruce "got a little political, which I thought was great, but he definitely seemed to lose a bit of the crowd around me when he suggested we impeach Bush."

Others thought the Boss was merely joking, since he suggested that Bush be replaced by fellow E Street bandmember Clarence Clemons. But Springsteen reportedly followed his impeachment exhortation with complaints about past and present elected leaders who have misled the country.

During a Boston performance this past Wednesday, Springsteen prefaced his rendition of "Born in the U.S.A." with a statement he termed "a public service announcement" about holding our political leaders accountable.

According to the Boston Herald, he closed the show by plugging Al Franken's latest Republican-bashing book.

Last April, Springsteen defended the Dixie Chicks after lead singer Natalie Maines said she was ashamed that President Bush was from her home state of Texas.

"To me, they're terrific American artists expressing American values by using their American right to free speech," the Boss insisted on his Web site.

Thank you for that correction. Can you at least confirm that you play the banjo (Deliverance-style)...?

How disappointing. You do at least have an outdoor toilet, right?

Why do you have to tear down this guys'talent? Springsteen
is an icon....

If he's an icon, he should keep his mouth shut. I'm tired
of overpaid whiners who are always telling us how to vote or
to run this country. If he's such a talented dude he should stick to what he knows best. Singers who attack President Bush are not too popular anymore. Hasn't he learned anything from the "texas chicks"....

Springsteen was a breath of fresh air in the mid-late 70's when classic rock was pretty much dead and disco was the rage, but his music has been irrelevant for about 23 years now (since the album The River). And you're right, his working-class woe-is-me crap got real old after a while.

You read correctly. The vast majority of people don't actually listen to music lyrics, so this this misinterpretation isn't exactly surprising.

Just ask Sting, who is constantly bemused by folks who insist on using The Police's "Every Breath You Take" as their wedding anthem song, when point in fact, his lyrics are about keeping "a watchful eye" on a former love, stalking mode, not some kind of passionate, we'll-be-together-forever love song.

You know, I must apologize for losing my patience earlier when I called you a moron. Seeing that apparently you are auditioning for a job as Al Franken's sidekick, I should have taken it with the requisite grain of salt. Still, I'm not touching that line with a ten foot pole.

Exactly.

"Every vow you break....Every smile you fake"

How much more obvious does it get? I can possibly - to be charitable about it - understand people misinterpreting these lyrics if they merely enjoy listening to the tune on the radio every once in a while, but to make it one's wedding anthem is just plain brain-dead.

Yeah, I became accostomed to his music as one big timeless ball of goo.

In many ways you would make a better foil to Al. Anyway, I'm sorry for denigrating outdoor toilets. There is apparently nothing better than the wind in your hair and the sound of a coyote howling in the distance when you are on the great white telephone.

Similarly, people thought The Boomtown Rats' great song (Tell Me Why) I Don't Like Mondays was an anthem for people too lazy to go into work at the beginning of the week...

He has to wear gloves if he doesn't use the outdoor urinal...? Interesting.

You know, I think I deserved a free hall pass or something for passing up the golden opportunity you served up with your toilet question. However, I will demonstrate to you what true class is by bowing out of this discussion.

Kinda like the talk radio show (forget the host) that uses "Independence Day" by a female country singer...the song was about a wife who can't take the abuse of her husband so she offs herself...nice theme. Some people should listen to the song before using it. I am ashamed I ever owned the Born in the USA album.

I'm glad you told me that, Tex. I thought it was just me. Do people actually like the way Springsteen "sings"? Sounds like a valsalva maneuver to me.
