I saw a Thrunderbird crash at the airshow at Transpo 72 at Dullas Airport. The plane was flying straight up when it lost power at about 2000 ft. The plane immediately starting falling, tail first. The pilot safely punch out. He then parachuted directly into the buring wreckage of the plane. He died.

My recollection is that the pilot punched out successfully, but his chute was destroyed by the fireball and he fell to his death. There were two other fatalities at that show; a hang-glider pilot and a pylon racer.
