An F-16 Thunderbird went down at an airshow near Boise. Pilot ejected right before impact and is OK. Pretty dramatic video available, if anyone can find a link.

Jeez, glad he was able to punch out. I just saw the T-Birds at the Chicago Air Show.

Wow! He cut it real close. I don't think he left himself a full second before impact. Ballsy stuff.

He just barely made it. The plane was only a few feet off the ground and you see him pop out. From what I've heard about ejecting, I think I might rather crash!

Sure, the ride up and out is violent, but it's better than being smushed along the length of the runway.

There was actually a case where a USMC F/A-18 smacked the ground--just flat-plated on the runway--during an airshow at El Toro. Didn't fireball, and from what I understand, the pilot got knocked silly, and then almost fired the ejection seat while the crash crew was opening up the cockpit!

I salute and admire the Air Force Thunderbirds (more of the "Best of The Best."
But the most dangerous and spell-binding shows I've ever seen were by the Blue Angels flying A4s.

I saw a Thrunderbird crash at the airshow at Transpo 72 at Dullas Airport. The plane was flying straight up when it lost power at about 2000 ft. The plane immediately starting falling, tail first. The pilot safely punch out. He then parachuted directly into the buring wreckage of the plane. He died.

Wow...you're right about that split-second. The plane was damn near on the ground before he got out. Good thing though - there was absolutely nothing left of that plane.

The Thunderbirds have had a tough time. A few years ago during practice, the leader's controls stuck when he was supposed to be pulling out from a loop. He flew right into the ground. The rest of team behind him followed him into the ground. They made a pefect diamond shaped streak in the desert.
I wonder if there is any place that has documented the down side of the Thunerbirds and the Blue Angels.
