Personally, I have a DSA SA-58 with the medium contour barrel, no bipod and no carrying handle. I love it, and so does everyone else who I've let shoot it. All metric. Hard to go wrong with a FAL, IMHO. Besides that, perhaps someone else here will have some suggestions.

Nice rifle.

I eventually plan to buy a battle rifle, and am leaning towards either a Sprinfield M1A or AR-10. I think I'm going to wait and see what happens with the AWB ban next year, as this will affect the price of mags.

I second the DSA option, but $650 is about half the price needed.

I have a Springfield Armory Supermatch in .308 set up for long range "target practice" by a buddy of mine, a fmr SEAL sniper.. Had it worked on (his "ask for the moon" suggestion list) by ROBAR out in Arizona. Included was their exterior proprietary coating called ROGARD and their exclusive interor coating they call NP3. THIS stuff is soooo cool. All metallic pieces which bear against each other peel off molecules which essentially makes the coating "self lubricating" which makes cleaning a snap (just wipe clean) and it feels just super smooth in every way. My scope is a automatic bullet drop compensator Sheppard. I only feed it Federal Match 168gr. Soooo I don't shoot it very often! LOL But I have it zeroed at 100 meters and can cover a three shot group at that range, with a quarter. I'm sure the rifle is capable of shooting dime sized groups...I'm just not capable of that at this point. I have also hit targets at 800 meters but the group size is a bit bigger....let's just say if the target had been live, I'd have killed it. With the Harris bipod attached, it's a tad bit heavy to go lugging all over God's green Earth; so I have a well made Ghillie suit to help me in case I jes decide to "sits and wait."

My choice for closer range would be (if I could afford it after almost selling my soul and blood for the M1A) a DSA SA-58 carbine in .308, of course. Close in knockdown power far surpassing the .223 and still fully capable of reaching out there with iron sights to 300+ meters. After that, these tired old eyes will settle behind the scope of the M1A.

been a LONG time since last I handled one, but I liked it a lot. The gas regulation system took a little getting used to, but once I figured it out I thought it was a nifty feature.
