California State Assembly passes SB328 Free tuition for illegal aliens

SACRAMENTO (AP) _ A bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to apply for financial aid at California community colleges was approved by the state Assembly Thursday.

The bill, by Sen. Martha Escutia, D-Norwalk, would direct the board of governors to establish a process so students without legal immigration status can apply to have tuition waived.

It would require that the student attended high school in California for at least three years, obtained a diploma or an equivalent degree and, if the student isn't in the state legally, has applied to become a legal resident.

Opponents said the bill followed in the footsteps of the recently approved bill to allow illegal immigrants to get drivers licenses.

``Now we want to give financial aid in community colleges to illegal aliens?'' said Assemblyman Dennis Mountjoy, R-Monrovia. ``Members, what is the matter with you?''

But supporters said the bill would help those students become educated members of the state's work force, helping the economy.

``We can continue to bury our heads in the sand and ignore it, but this helps kids who are in this state, who have graduated from high school, who we hope will go on to college, or learn a trade,'' said Assemblyman Joe Nation, D-San Rafael. ``It's the right thing to do politically, it's the right thing to do socially, and it's the right thing to do economically as well.''

The bill was approved on a 43-27 vote, returning to the Senate for approval of Assembly amendments.

Have they all gone mad???

They're all Democrats. They're already mad. This is just a litle payback to the voters of California for daring to recall a fellow Democrat of theirs.

I would call it going into exile. Seeking political asylum in other states until the communists are defeated.

There either really stupid, ignorant, or just diabolical.

IT is those combinations that really scare me:

Stupid and evil
Stupid and Stubborn
Stubborn and violent
Evil and relentless...

You get the picture.

When you pledge your alligence to the nation of Mexico why wouldn't you want to rob California blind? California is just a huge pinata to bust open and take from. Always take take take.

This has got to be a joke. I know our state already is giving in-state tuition to illegals, whereas someone from, say, Oregon, pays over $22,000 to go to UC Wherever.

Now it's not just "in-state" level (about a 70% subsidy), but free, 100% taxpayer funded?

Cinco de Mayo is already celebrated. (Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexican victory over the French at Puebla in 1862.)

Funny, thats just what I am doing this morning. House closes escrow next month. I have to wonder just what economics model these politicians are following. I guess they really think that they can spend their way out of debt.

Damn. I just bought a house in California. If I'd have known how bad things were going to get I'd have moved to Colorado (my second choice).

Good luck.

The RATS know that they are not going to be re-elected next time around (crossing my fingers) so they are trying to push through as much garbage as they can. Hopefully Kahleefornia will get a governor that will fight to undo these radical bills.

how ironic, the name of the dis-assemblyman... boy this says so much.. graduated from high school? why were they in high school as illegals? go on to learn a trade? they seem to have learned how to dodge the govt real well (or at least the fed govt since the state govt is complicit in their illegality.
{right thing to do politically, it's the right thing to do socially}

deprogramed: since we are all freakin commies, this policy fulfills our goal of internationalizing all socialists together and destroying archaic nationalistic selfishness.

economically? yea.. to meet our needs as freakin commies we must drive down the value of labor so all will be poor. in addition, legal americans without jobs will see the illegals not working and start to protest and will join us for the overthrow....

This is all a transparent effort to shore up support for Davis with Hispanics. It wont work. Bustamante continues to gain strength, and is assisted by the chaos in the GOP. If McClintock stays in another 2 weeks before leaving the damage will be too great for Schwarzenegger to overcome by Oct. 7.

If Selfish Tom stays in, we can only pray that the recall vote fails. Gray is far better than Cruz.

I can't see any major companies making their headquarters in California in the future. The cost involved....would set my mind on AZ or Vegas.

Ummm...believe it or not, I don't have a problem with this. Once you get past the inflammatory headline, you'll see this isn't a "cross the border for free college" bill. It requires:

1) That the student must have attended a California high school AND graduated, so recent border-crossers looking for an education need not apply.

2) The illegal alien must first apply for legal residency, meaning that they will no longer be an illegal immigrant.

I have no problem with LEGAL, EDUCATED, and TAXPAYING immigrants...just illegal criminal ones working for cr*p wages and undermining our economy. This bill will help turn the latter into the former.
