Tortured cat died of skull fractures/ Reward of $2,000 offered for information leading to arrest and c

By Reed Williams / Daily Progress staff writer September 9, 2003

A cat found nailed to a piece of plywood over the weekend in Albemarle County died of skull and neck fractures and had been spray-painted gray and orange, according to results of a necropsy. The cat killing was at least the third incident of animal cruelty in Albemarle since late July.

A $2,000 reward is offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the feline's death.

The male cat, which was found Saturday in a construction area at the Stone Creek Village apartment complex, died of broken bones inflicted by a sharp object, according to a spokeswoman with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which conducted the necropsy.

"It was apparently nailed to a plywood board at the seat, the right ear and the tail," said the spokeswoman, Elaine Lidholm. Much of the cat's body was spray-painted gray, and its genitals were orange, Lidholm said.

The cat's death comes days after a dog was shot in the leg and six weeks after a dog named Britta was found on railroad tracks with her front legs bound and a possible gunshot wound to the head.

"Honest to God, it's beginning to feel like there's an unusual number of animal-cruelty cases that are surfacing," said Carolyn Foreman, executive director of the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA.

Specific numbers of such cases reported to Albemarle police were unavailable late Tuesday.

"There's such a thing as accidental cruelty, but this is willful," Foreman said of the cat's death. "It's malicious. It's thought-out."

Sgt. John White of the county police declined Tuesday to say whether there are suspects in any of the three recent abuse incidents.Despite these injuries, along with dehydration and parasites, the dog survived and underwent surgery.

The other recent dog-abuse incident occurred last week. Foreman said a dog now named Edgar was given to the SPCA after someone found it on the side of a road. It had been shot in the leg, which had to be amputated, she said. New homes have been found for Britta and Edgar.

Anyone with information on the abuse cases is asked to call Albemarle police at (434) 296-5807 or Crimestoppers at (434) 977-4000.

I hope the persons responsible for this are caught. People who hurt those that can't protect themselves are at the top of my poop list.

I guess the orange spray paint lets the cops rule out a coyote as the perp.

Was this man in the area?

"I want to kill him," Gibson said of the columnist. "I want his intestines on a stick. I want to kill his dog."

Naw, ol' Mel probably woulda run-through some of the Birkenstock-wearing, hate-America-first college pukes from U.Va., Braveheart-style! He's apparently got nothing against cats...

I am not at all in favor of cruelty to pets, but their owners should *not* allow them to run around free. I happen to like birds. Cats kill birds, so I don't like it when I see cats running around the neighborhood.

As macbre as it may seem, perhaps incidents like this will serve as a warning to other pet owners. It is the wrong way to go about it, but I don't know the right way.

There is a man who lives behind me who leaves his dog outside in all weather conditions and at all times. It barks and it howls. People have complained to him, but he does nothing. It has crossed my mind to kill it. I'm not going to, but the thought has entered my mind.

What I would really like to do is to torch his house. I'm not going to do that either. Still, somehow, this guy needs to get the message.

Guarantee that the person that did this is just inches away from moving from animals to people..... Dahmer as an example.

Hey, there are left wing pukes @ UVa, as there are @ any university.

But who's head football coach had to make a for show apology for telling some of the players who were worried about flying right after 9-11 that they didn't have to worry because he wouldn't allow any Arabs on the plane?

That sound like the normal people are playing PC crap behind the scenes like they do @ leftwing schools similar to UNC where entering freshmen have to read the "We Love Jihad" book before showing up for first semester classes?

Sure, we have our famous leftists like the Perky one:

but let me tell you, she served a useful purpose on Rugby Road after the kegs ran dry (or so I'm told, heh-heh.)

UVa has some class act alums out there you may be familiar with such as:

Wahoowa, UVa rules. Go 'Hoos

I would have bragged about this one too,

but he went RINO on us and let Hillary run Estrada off

I'm w/ you there.

I've been on some series cat bashing (no pun intended) threads on FR.

If I can catch those three that are killing the birds in my yard, they too stand a good chance of going to the great litter box in the sky.

But I won't nail them to a board and paint them.

Barking dogs drive me nuts. Here in Sacramento, you can call the Police on him for his dog disturbing the peace after 10:00pm. Don't think about hurting the dog, that's what dogs do, they bark, now the owner's another story...

Some dogs have good reason to bark regardless of the hour. They're watchdogs and they know it, and they bark at the teens that roam unsupervised late at night in neighborhoods like mine. I LIKE that they do that. It gives the little cretins pause when they are considering climbing fences and helping themselves to stuff. No dog? Around here? Then you'll likely have no weedwhacker, gas can, etc., for very long either. These kids think if it's not nailed down and they can get to it without getting bitten, it's theirs.

TOH, I was raised to believe that dogs are outside animals. Give them shelter from the weather, definitely--and plenty of company, but they are not inside animals.

Cats, on the other hand, belong indoors; fences cannot keep them in, and you can't keep them from being a nuisance to other neighbors.

It's just the way I was raised.

I don't have any information, but I do have a letter 'c' for the poli_e. It seems they need one.

Nothing personal, I just had to get a shot in from the hallowed halls of William & Mary. And relax, I think our lefties are probably bigger elitist idiots than your's. I've had to read many of the applications for our freshmen students, and I swear 75% of the essays these kids are writing could be entitled "Why I Hate America!" Regards...

Please don't complicate things.

It is only a goofy local small college town newspaper that's outshined by the school's rag. They are having problems with their self-esteem.

If only one letter of the alphabet is lost, they are doing well.

Bill and Mary, eh? My Dad & Sister are Bill and Mary alums. I would have sworn your loyalties were with the agricultural college up in B'burg.

Intresting trivia for you though; Dr. Walter E. Williams did the Rush Limbaugh show last Friday. He opened up the show reading a letter to the editor from a Wm. and Mary student about some class they wouldn't let her take because she was white.

If you have access to Rush 24/7 you might be interested in giving it a listen.
