Collection of Martin Luther King Jr. Writings to Be Sold

ATLANTA - A 7,000-piece collection of the writings of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., which spent four decades in his widow's basement, is ready for sale after being on exhibit for two weeks at a New York auction house.

The items - appraised at $30 million - went on display Aug. 26, and hundreds of people have strolled through Sotheby's in Manhattan to get a glimpse into King's literary mind.

Sotheby's said several potential buyers have come forward, but officials would not reveal them.

The collection includes speeches, letters, sermon notes and even King's college transcripts.

The King estate, headed by his widow, Coretta Scott King, and Sotheby's officials are hoping to get at least $20 million for the collection. They hope to sell it intact to a museum, library or university that will continue to display it and make it available for scholarly research.

King's youngest son, Dexter, said recently that proceeds from the sale will help pay expenses at the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta, as well as lawyer fees.

The collection is being sold by a "private treaty," giving the auction house and the King family more control over who buys it.

I wonder if MLK Jr. is turning over in his grave, again, and again?

More money grubbing by the Professional Black Widow and her family.

I'm sure that Brother Martin is spinning in his grave.

My 15 year old was recently assigned to read MLK jr.'s letter that was written from the Birmingham jail. It was a wonderful piece of literature, and whether you agree or disagree with all his opinions he had thought them through and knew exactly what he wanted to say.

probably been spinning so hard for years, he will come up through the Australian dirt...

If you are talking about Coretta Scott King, Oprah had her on her show for a makeover. She should have made over her attitude.

Thanks for posting this article. It is very interesting.

Does anyone know what this means?

The collection is being sold by a "private treaty," giving the auction house and the King family more control over who buys it.

I thought that the 'private treaty' meant they had control over the price (and by that, over who buys it) by not having to sell unless they got their low limit price. But, I am certainly no expert. ANYONE KNOW?
