Why does Carter go around the world and try to legitimize every despotic regime there is?

Here he is yesterday in Beijing. He told them that normalizing relations with the ChiComs was the most gratifying thing he did in his presidency.

Carter and Hu Jintao, "President" of China.

HEADLINE: Chinese president meets former US president

BODY: BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Monday that stable and healthy relations between China and the United States conforms to the fundamental interests of the two peoples, and is conducive to the peace, stability and development of the region and the world at large.

Hu made the remarks in a meeting with visiting former US President Jimmy Carter.

Hu said that China and the United States have conducted fruitful cooperation in fighting terrorism as well as in trade and economic fields in recent years, and have maintained consultations and coordination on major international and regional issues.

He noted that Sino-US relations have further developed since the two countries forged diplomatic ties.

Hu expressed appreciation for the efforts Carter has made to promoting the relations between the two countries as well as the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

He pointed out that China and the United States have different national conditions, and thus they inevitably have certain diversities and differences. However, he said, the two sides have also shared extensive common interests.

He voiced his hope that both sides would expand their common interests and properly handle each other's concerns so as to further the constructive and cooperative relations.

Hu reaffirmed the Chinese government's stance on the Taiwan issue, and hoped that the US side could follow its commitment, observe the three Sino-US joint communiques, properly handle the Taiwan issue, including not sending wrong signals to those people who support "Taiwan independence", and play a constructive role in the peaceful reunification of China.

Carter said that he is happy to visit China again and meet with Hu.

Carter was responsible for normalizing diplomatic relations between the United States and China when he was president. He said it was the most gratifying decision he made during his term.

He recalled his meeting with Deng Xiaoping, who was Chinese vice premier at that time. The Chinese village election system also greatly impressed him, he said.

"Why does Carter go around the world and try to legitimize every despotic regime there is?"
Two reasons.
1. He is given to the wishful thinking that there is inherent good in every human being and that the reds cannot be all that bad.
2. He sincerely believes all that jive about socialism being a true progressive force in improving the lives of everyday workers and improving race relations.

The fact that Carter is now admitting his best relations were with the Chinese is no surprise. Maybe it was the horny goat weed. I wonder how many evil alliances were spawned from those illict relations.

He said it was the most gratifying decision he made during his term.

And here I always thought his- and a spineless Senate's - giving away of our Panama Canal was his most gratifying decision.

The most gratifying? Even more gratifying than failing to prop up the Shah of Iran and allowing the modern worldwide Jihadist revolution to start under his watch by not hammering the Iranian "revolutionaries" into submission and thus convincing the Islamists that messing with the U.S. is a losing proposition?

Gee, US - China relations hit a snag this week concerning the devalued yen. Problems abound concerning China's MFN status and disproportionate direction of taraffed trade.

Then, BAM... Peanuthead is in China! This stinks.

I don't know about gratifying, but I'm sure it was the most rewarding.

Does anyone deny that we can't benifit from China?

As it stands now with their inflated RMB and tarriffs and other barriers to entry, the one-way trade issue is bad.

That said, we can definately benefit from China onces the doors are pried open. If this lefty can make that happen, more power to him.

Worst case, he does nothing. How does that make it worse?

"The most gratifying?"

And, actually, isn't Jimmeh making a little more of this "accomplishment" than is really warranted.

After all, Richard Nixon, the Great Satan to the Democrats, opened the relationship with Red China. This was truly an earthshaking world geopolitical move, that played large in the US-USSR Cold War.

Jimmeh merely normalized the relationship, which meant that the "mission" was now an "embassy" and the "charge d'affaires" was now an Ambassador. Nothing else changed -- except the egos in Beijing and, apparently, Washington, DC.

Jimmeh is trying to mooch some credit from Tricky Dick. Some "accomplishment"...

I forget some of the details, but mainland China's price was for carter to abandon taiwan. Under Carter's "moral" leadership we abandoned a free nation to embrace a brutal, barbaric communist one.

Well, I'm skeptical of that. Not that I feel Taiwan doesn't deserve some protection, but China may not be the predator here.

I am intimately involved with technology and Taiwan is doing fine....

"There is a great malaise across this country, and it's all you peoples' fault."
