After eight years away from newspapers, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed is creating a new comic strip called "Opus," starring his beloved penguin of the same name.
The Washington Post Writers Group, which will syndicate the strip, is expected to officially announce Breathed's return this Sunday. The reclusive Breathed, who rarely gives interviews, could not be reached yesterday for comment.
The new strip will appear on Sundays in The Washington Post starting Nov. 23.
Breathed drew the wildly popular "Bloom County" and "Outland" comic strips, which introduced the world to the naive Opus and his hairball-spitting sidekick, Bill the Cat. "Opus" will run on Sundays only and will fill half a page in the comics section.

sunday only? Just think, papers will have something else to run in place on TruDUHs odes to onanism.
BB was and probably still is a lefty, but he skewered the left pretty good as well. Rush tells us being "middle of the road" will get you run over, but Steve Dallas and Bill T Cat told us "Middle of the road, it stank. Lets run over Lionel Richie with a tank." hehehehehehe
Somewhere in my basement, I have a Mac case with PC guts and baby shoe feet. Time to dig out the ole Banana Jr 3000.

Actually, those who know me often question whether Breathed based Steve Dallas on me.

Thanks for posting one of my all time favorites. The reality of this in California, Oregon and Washington is very scary.

I have five or six different Opus's (or is it Opi?) packed in a box - got them all in 87 or 88 - should be collector's items by now.
Welcome back Opus - I just wish he'd bring all the characters back.

I LOVED Steve Dallas.
Who was the vet in the wheelchair? I remember a really great strip one time, where somebody was harassing him about "Don't you want to get even with the government for sending you, don't you want to explode with rage, don't you want (some other leftist political thing)? C'mon, you can tell me, what do you REALLY want to do?"
And the guy said "Walk."

I was going through stuff to put into storage the other day and found my old 45. Still have the book it came from, too. Gads, that has to be at least 15 years ago.

Was the vet's name Cutter John, or something like that? He dated the cute local schoolteacher, whose name escapes me at the moment.

When I saw the liberal in that strip, I was trying to think of who he reminded me of, and then I remembered. It was that pony-tailed guy from the 1992 debates that Limbaugh always makes fun of.

The most blatant example that showed where Berke's sympathies lie was when he did a strip after "The Day After" viewed for the first time on TV. There was no humor in that one, it just showed all the characters being real sad, with no dialogue.

Actually he reminds me of about 200 such liberals I have meet in California for decades. They pretend to be good hardworking white collar guys.
Give them a couple of glasses of wine or a couple of beers, and their reality starts to ooze out. Now most of these clowns are in their 50's and early 60's if they haven't died from a self inflicted death or worse. They hate GW, conservatives, organized religion, the flag, our military and America.

Sounds great. Now if we could just get Bill Watterson to start drawing Calvin and Hobbes again. . .
YES! Bring back Calvin & Hobbs!!
Maybe Opus' return will get him thinking about it.

The vet in the Wheelchair was Cutter John.
I have too many favorite Bloom County strips to even think of one, but the sequence where Milo and Binkley went to a college campus to start a no nukes rally and found out that modern students were Reaganite frat boys comes close.
Of course, the fact I was a Reaganite frat boy might have something to do with that.

I'm rather fond of my Anna K. doll. Ummm.... life size, right?

Anyone ever hit "Gloom County"? Kind of a Gothy tribute comic?
