Indianapolis Star reporting Gov. O'Bannon is just out of surgery. No other details, yet.

O'Bannon is a nice guy, although a lousy governor. I know of no scandal attached to his personal dealings. My prayers are with him and his family.

The new Governor appoints a Lt who then must be approved by the General Assembly. That will get political if one of the Dims who is planning to run for Gov gets appointed. Kernan has already publicly stated he won't run for governor.

He is an old-style democrat from Southern Indiana, and would be missed.

I met him at a breakfast in Corydon, at a place called the Kintner House. His politic's are farther to the right, then most R's out here in California. He is a gentleman, and a very nice person. He own's a chain of newspapers, and was born in Corydon.

Yes. I hate to see the old-timers leave us. They remember when politics wasn't personal and vindictive, as the Clintonistas practice it now. He did do some good things as governor, although his budget was a mess.

Regardless of the jerks on this thread, O'Bannon is a nice guy and should be prayed for. He was conducting the business of the State of Indiana, and if he dies he will be mourned by many in the state.

Despite his politics, he is a decent man. He is an old-style democrat from Southern Indiana, and would be missed.

Well said, Miss Marple. I'm not as "up" on state politics as I should be, but from what little I've read/heard, he is a good man.

Kernan is a snake which dumped the college footbal hall of fame on the taxpayers of south bend even though he promised not to. He wa a former POW and with mccain in vietnam. They were the only two people I believe gained wieght in the hanoi hilton and the two previously listed are the ones. Kernan is anti gun and ran one of the biggest gun shows out of south bend years ago only to be sued and the city lost a lot of money which the taxpayers got screwed on too.

Kernan is a jerk I just hope he keeps his word and doesn't run for governor like he said he would.

I read on another board a RUMOR that Ind. state employees have been notified that he has died. I have no idea how true that is but you never know.

Any news,anyone?The Indy Star story indiacted due to federal privacy laws,even his chief of staff would not be able to ascertain his condition until his wife gets to Chicago.

It's a 4-hour car ride from Indy to downtown Chicago especially if traffic is bad on 80/94. Hopefully she took the Skyway (I-90). The trip can be done in less time, of course, if speeding......... (ahem).

There's a live news conference going on right now at Northwestern Medical.
The surgery is over and the doctors will not know his condition until later. Duh!
Other than that, a bunch of presstitutes are asking repetative questions rearding his condition.
Needless to say, the Governor is going to be out of commision for the forseeable future...
The most interesting question I've heard so far is...

The Lt. Gov. has taken over Executive duties due to something refered to as a "common sense clause" in the state's constitution.

Probably in a chopper. It's MUCH faster than flying much of anything short of a private plane which would have had to land at Midway or O'Hare, now thanks to MEIGS being bulldozed by Da Mare (Chicago-ese for Mayor Daley).

He is alive, on a ventilator, had bleeding/surgery on both sides of the brain, the right side from a massive stroke, the other and part of the right side from trauma from the fall. He is in a drug-induced coma and they won't know much else for 24-48 hrs.

I would agree - I fully expect their to be an all out festival atmosphere and News Years eve Party mentality over at DU when Ronaldus Magnus finally passes.

No fooling. The Democrats didn't even properly mourn Wellstone - at least in public, it came off like a political RALLY instead of a solemn remembrance service.

There were probably staffers that knew where he was. The important people always have their "people" (i.e. entourage) or handlers.

If he was "dead", one would have to figure the doctors would have stated that.

The doctors seem unwilling to commit to much other than that.
Until the man wakes up (or not) after the ordeal he's been forced to endure, who are the doctors to say how "bad" of a condition the man is in?

Hometown reacts to news of O'Bannon's illness

Corydon, the southern Indiana hometown of Gov. Frank O'Bannon, was filled with heartache today.

Howard Saylor, 71, who owns the farm next door to O'Bannon's, said the governor had visited him just last week and the two had shared watermelon on Saylor's front porch.

"They've been one of the best neighbors I've ever had. Even if he wasn't the governor, I guess he'd be one of the best neighbors."

The O'Bannons grow primarily alfalfa on the 70-acre farm west of Corydon, and it's where the couple go for weekend getaways.

"He loves that place. He really enjoyed getting out and going around on the farm," Saylor said.

Saylor said Judy O'Bannon called him about 2:30 p.m. with a brief update on her husband's condition, saying that the prognosis wasn't good.

O'Bannon's sister, Rosamond O'Bannon Sample, who still lives in Corydon, said the news of her brother's collapse was "a real shock."

"The last time I had seen him, he looked fine. I thought he looked relaxed," she said.
