Zell Miller is the last sane Democrat left and his retirement only underscores the demise of the Party in Georgia. The Democratic leadership should really listen to his counsel but they won't. They're determined to go to the hard Left as though the lessons of the last election where that the American people didn't hear their message. Oh they heard them all right. For U.S. Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.) to ascribe to himself the virtue of a conscience would be laughable were the issues involved not so serious ("Miller book calls Democrats out of touch," News, Sept. 5).
Was it conscience that allowed Miller to renege on his vow to seek only a single term as governor? Was it principle that caused him to flee from the flag issue when opposed by a vocal minority? How much courage did it take for Miller to boost education funding through the politically painless means of a lottery?
Answers: no, no, and none.
Throughout his career, Miller has demonstrated commitment only to this principle: that he remain in power.

The kind of Democrat Zel Miller is has fallen into history. My father, a leader in Dem politics for a few California counties for many years, was that same kind...very honorable, true to principles. He ended up occasionally organizing campaigns for Republicans in his last years of life, some of the Dems in his area were actually communists. Moderate, ethical values he looked for always. We just don't see that much any more. Evan Bayh comes close.

The media will ignore this. Zell Miller won't be on the Today Show, precisely because Katie won't want to promote his book. That is, unless, the dims have come up with some dirt or an attack line they focus group test that they think will cut him down. It's too late for the Ft. Marcy Park treatment.

Bet you he doesn't even get coverage. They want to muzzle and shut that kind of talk up. Zell Miller is about the only Demonratic with a conscience and putting country above party. He is and has been in the wrong party, but never brings himself to leave the Demonrat label. I will buy that book.
