ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- A locomotive broke loose on Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster Friday, killing a man and injuring 10 other people, officials said.
TV helicopters showed a triage unit set up near the ride and one person being taken on a stretcher to an ambulance.
The roller coaster takes amusement park visitors on a twisting, turning ride aboard what is supposed to be a runaway train in the Old West. Riders zoom through mineshafts and caverns, past falling rocks and tumbling waterfalls.
The ride opened in 1979, making it one of newer roller coasters at Disneyland. It is computer-operated, said Joe Aguirre, a park spokesman.

Hey we still have one of those. Think it'd be worth something as a museum piece one of these days?! ;-)

Hey we still have one of those. Think it'd be worth something as a museum piece one of these days?! ;-)Maybe someday, but not now. They currently go for as little as $10 on eBay.

Exactly the image in my mind when a computer ex-spurt told me the great black-out was not caused by a computer.

How can a rider be at fault for a locomotive braking loose?

Hmmmm.......the locomotive at the front of the ride came loose, the accident happened in a tunnel and the victim was still inside the "train" when they reaached him.
Quick, where's my deerstalker's hat, pipe and magnifying glass?

The roller coaster takes amusement park visitors on a twisting, turning ride aboard what is supposed to be a runaway train... Just, well you know...

I presume guests pay extra for the privilege of riding on a more realistic runaway train?

Now the slide show NJAPF just posted said a car derailed:
"Big Thunder Mountain railroad rollercoaster car at rest after a derailment caused injuries at the park."
Whereas the above press release says a car broke lose.
That does lend a few more meanings.

This crash makes me think of what happens in Roller Coaster Tycoon. After so long, the rides become obsolete no matter how much maintenance is done on them. My whole family of 5 went on this ride back in 1997 - it was the only roller coaster I could get my kids to ride without being afraid back then.

I presume guests pay extra for the privilege of riding on a more realistic runaway train? Back in the old days, this would have been an "E ticket" ride. I was in high school when it opened, and found out soon enough just how lame this "coaster" was. It was more like Dumbo or Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Looks like they finally got around to making it more realistic.
What will the park's lawyers say? "Well, it's supposed to be a runaway train."

Does the "locomotive" breaking loose mean that the car itself came off the tracks? I don't understand the vocabulary or schematics of this ride.

That must be a huge "cleat" to kill someone and tear off a foot! I thought that the steamboat was on a belt, resembling a bike chain.

Disney is notorious for covering up less than "happy" incidents in their parks (stabbings unreported, etc). And, from what I have heard, they settle "BIG" regardless of the worthiness of the case, lest the image of the "real" world taint the notion of the "Happiest Place on Earth".
