Poll leaders Bustamante, Arnold take fire
Washington Times ^ | Thursday, September 4, 2003
Posted on 09/03/2003 10:40 PM PDT by JohnHuang2
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (AP) — In yesterday's first debate of California's recall election, candidates vying to oust Gov. Gray Davis attacked front-runner Cruz Bustamante for accepting American Indian casino money and connected actor Arnold Schwarzenegger to an adviser's unpopular remarks on property taxes....

Cruz Control - Is Schwarzenegger anti-immigrant? Is Bustamante? ~ John Fund
Opinion Journal ^ | September 3, 2003 | John Fund
Posted on 09/03/2003 11:22 PM PDT by Elle Bee
JOHN FUND'S POLITICAL DIARY
California's Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante is now a desperate candidate making audacious claims.
Mr. Bustamante, the only major Democrat running to replace Gray Davis as governor, is accusing Arnold Schwarzenegger of being anti-immigrant. The lieutenant governor told CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday that he is "shocked" that his opponent is "trying to take on immigrants in this state. I think that is wrong." On CNN, he said, "Arnold's going back to the same wedge-issue politics that his mentor Pete Wilson suggested." ....

Gas lines for California? (Bustamante)
TownHall.com ^ | 9/04/03 | Alan Reynolds

California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante is campaigning for his boss's job with the logically impossible theme of "No on Recall, Yes on Bustamante." Until very recently, there was no visible difference between the policy plans of Davis and Bustamante -- i.e., to tax and spend with abandon. But now there is one big difference. And that difference reveals that Bustamante is, remarkably, even more incompetent than Davis when it comes to dealing with economic problems....

Bustamante faces suit over large donations
Sacramento Bee ^ | Sept. 3, 2003 | Alexa H. Bluth
Posted on 09/03/2003 11:36 PM PDT by FairOpinion
Republican state Sen. Ross Johnson said Wednesday he will sue to block Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante from collecting millions of dollars in large donations for his governors race, after the states political watchdog agency said it is unlikely to rule on complaints about the Democrats fund-raising until after the recall election. On the same day, however, the Fair Political Practices Commission made a decision on another matter on the Oct. 7 ballot, asking a judge to order supporters of a racial privacy initiative to disclose the names of individual financial backers. The action is the first time the FPPC has sued before an election to require campaign disclosure....

A Dangerous Man (Cruz Bustamante: Traitor?)
adamyoshida.com ^ | September 4, 2003 | Adam Yoshida
Posted on 09/04/2003 12:33 AM PDT by adamyoshida
Cruz Bustamante is a dangerous man. I say this not simply because he is a liberal Democrat, through that is worrying enough, rather I say it because he has well-documented links with a racist group which wants to reverse the results of the Mexican War and tear the Southwest out of the United States. Despite being given ample opportunity to do so, he has yet to renounce these links. He has, in fact, refused to do so. The election of Cruz Bustamante would be yet another step on the road to the creation of a post-American California, a chunk of Mexico entirely subsidized by American dollars. The point of this recall is to throw out Governor Gray Davis. However, I daresay, I would much rather see ol Grayout stay on as Governor than have a man in that office whose loyalty to the United States would appear to be questionable at best....

Bustamante Silent on Separatist Past
Fox News ^ | 9/4/03 | Matt Hayes
Posted on 09/04/2003 5:30 AM PDT by Brian Mosely
There is a popular saying among Hispanics, Dime con quien andas y te diré quien eres . It means Tell me with whom you hang out, and I will tell you who you really are.
Who does California gubernatorial candidate Cruz Bustamante (search) hang out with? By now, Californians know that Bustamante refuses to repudiate the Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan, known as MEChA (search), the separatist student organization he joined in college. But do they know what MEChA does, or refuses to do, and what, apparently, are Bustamantes reasons for not condemning MEChA? ....

California Legislature Approves Illegal Drivers License
Sacramento Bee ^ | By Jim Sanders and Ed Fletcher
Posted on 09/04/2003 6:19 AM PDT by Paloma_55
After years of political fighting, the Legislature gave final approval Wednesday to fiercely debated legislation promising marriage-like rights to gay couples and allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses.
Gov. Gray Davis has vowed to sign both bills, AB 205 and SB 60, which targeted two of the state's most contentious social issues and sharply divided lawmakers along party lines, with most Democrats supporting the proposals and most Republicans opposed....

Surprise: the debate was enlightening
ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER ^ | 9/4/2003 | EDITORIAL
Posted on 09/04/2003 8:51 AM PDT by kellynla
We hope those East Coast critics who continue to depict the California recall as a circus-like event were watching Wednesday's televised forum with Gov. Gray Davis and the far more interesting debate that followed among five candidates to replace him. There's no doubt that serious issues about the state's governance were addressed.
Conspicuous by his absence was Arnold Schwarzenegger, who chose not to attend the debate despite no apparent scheduling difficulties. The candidate, who is leading in some polls, still wants to manage his media appearances as if he were only a movie star and not a candidate.
Still, viewers got a chance to see Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, who leads or runs second in most polls, as well as Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock, the Green Party's Peter Camejo, independent Arianna Huffington and businessman Peter Ueberroth discuss the state's budget crisis, electricity crisis and other issues ranging from illegal immigration to spending cuts to abortion and medical marijuana....
