Illegals sue over college entrance

A group of Hispanic illegal immigrants sued seven state colleges and universities yesterday in federal court, claiming the schools denied them admission because of their immigration status.
The lawsuit . . . says the schools' presidents and rectors are following ill-conceived legal advice from state Attorney General Jerry W. Gilgore, who last fall issued an opinion recommending that all Virginia colleges deny admission to illegal immigrants and suggeting that admissions officers report potentially illegal applicants to federal authorities. . .
Andres Tobar, co-chairman of the Immigrant Legal Rights Coalition, said Mr. Kilgore's policy punishes hundreds of high school students whose illegal status is no fault of their own, inasmuch as they were brought in the United States by their parents. . .
Marlinda Palpido, of Alexandria, agreed. Mrs. Palpido, 33, said she wouldn't be were she is now if she hadn't graduated from Virginia Tech . . . Mrs. Palpido was an illegal immigrant until she got married in 1997.
"I am now working as an engineer as a Navy contractor, but if they had closed the doors, I would probably be a nanny or a cook," she said.
Mr. Kilgore said through a spokesman that he will defend the schools.
"It seems as if they are attempting to force Virginia colleges and universities to accept illegal aliens," spokesman Timothy Murtaugh said. . .
Five of the six plaintiffs are identified only as Jane Doe I, II and III and John Doe I and II, and either attend or have graduated from Virginia public schools. The other plaintiff is Equal Access Education, a group of Northern Virginia immigrants and their families and friends.
The identities of the five students, all of whom are natives of Central and South American countries, were not revealed because none of them are U.S. citizens or alwful permanent resdidents, according to the lawsuit. . .
Tisha Tallman, regional counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), said some of them hold Temporary Protective Status visas, but had not been granted permanent residence. MALDEF is a civil rights organization that is spearheading the lawsuit. . .
Mr. Murtaugh said Virginia is not trying to set immigration policy, but rather to ensure everyone follows the law. "These anonymous plaintiffs are readily admitting they are not following the law," he said. "It's unfair to those who have followed the process legally."

No problem, charge them the full fare like other students from overseas must pay. If they want to be treated the same, treat them the same. Of course I don't really beleive that. They should not be here. Yes, this is the tWiLiGhT ZoNe!

It's not clear from this text whether Mrs. Palpido was still illegal when she went to Virginia Tech; if so, I seem to recall that every one of the myriad college applications I filled out asked about visa status for foreign nationals. If she lied, she was accepted into college under false premises. If she told the truth, isn't the college is guilty of aiding and abeting her lawbreaking?
Something is rotten in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Don't you understand? It's a civil right to come to America and help yourself to the goodies. And it's racist to have borders.

That's the thing--when I hear the big "r" word get thrown aroung because Americans don't want illegals in the country, I never hear discussion of WHY that might be. It couldn't have anything to do with the fact that this is the first generation of immigrants who think the American dream should be handed to them on a silver platter on the backs of REAL AMERICAN citizens. I have heritage before this country was even a country and on one side I'm first generation American. Not anywhere in my family tree where there was an immigrant was there someone with their hands outstretched demanding money, rights, etc the same as those living here. Nor were any of the immigrants in my family here illegally. This is what permissivneness of this situation has done--it has emboldened people who are breaking the law to sue *US* because we won't cater to them in this instance when we've catered to them before. They are also emboldened when hispanic became a "race" instead of a cultural identification. This was the problem with tolerating illegals to begin with--it's the old give them an inch and they'll take a mile saying.

Actually, this lawsuit may be a good idea....
Sure if your a lawyer on the dole. It's commonsense, there is no need for a lawsuit and it's insulting to Virginians who will have to pay for this crap.

While I appreciate your posting what you did, you posted only broken-up excerpts, which cannot properly be quoted, with no link. I just had to spend almost ten minutes hunting down the article, which is neither on the WT's front page, nor among its national headlines. Please post links in the future.

True Canadians can get visas but it can be difficult. The truck drivers who drive stuff back and forth over the boarder would need a visa as they would be working in the US.

Well, this pretty well tears it. I'm ready to pack 'em up and send 'em home.
Their faces should be digitized and stored for reference to facilitate a free stay at one of our crossbar hotels for repeated offenses.
Damn them and their liberal democRat criminal cohorts, and the RINOs as well, for sitting on their butts and doing nothing about this problem.
We need to elect more reps like Tancredo. This government's out of control, and we have the power to take it back, IF WE'LL ONLY DO IT.
