Kerry Kicks Off Campaign in State He Once Trashed

When Sen. John Kerry officially announces his presidential candidacy today in South Carolina, he better hope local Democrats don't remember how he trashed the state as being unimportant to his presidential campaign earlier this year.

"Al Gore proved that you can win the election without a single Southern state, if he'd only won New Hampshire," Kerry told a group of San Francisco Democrats in March.

Now that Kerry is trailing Vermont upstart Howard Dean in both Iowa and New Hampshire, however, he's turned his eyes southward to try and burnish his credentials as a candidate of national stature.

Kerry spokeswoman Kelley Benander told Newsday on Monday, "Starting the tour in South Carolina allows Kerry to demonstrate that he is a national candidate, whose personal story and national security credentials transcend geographic lines."

Unmentioned by Benander: Kerry's newfound love for South Carolina gives the stumbling candidate a third bite at the apple, after blowing his shot in the first two presidential primary contests.

In a bid to appeal to the South's traditional respect for the military, Kerry will launch his presidential campaign in front of the decommissioned Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Yorktown near Charleston.

Still, the Massachusetts Democrat's earlier comment about not needing the South to win may leave some Carolinians wondering if Kerry is turning to them in an act of desperation.

Back in March, one-time Carter campaign aide Craig Crawford, who now writes for the Congressional Quarterly, warned that Kerry's drop-dead message could come back to haunt him.

"I don't believe candidates should ever blow their cover," he told nationally syndicated radio hosts Batchelor and Alexander. "It really allows the interpretation, which I think would be very dangerous for him, that he's going to write off the South."

Kerry is on life support. If there is any dirt in Dean's background, this is when it really starts coming out. Gephardt and Lieberman can go a couple of more months with bad polls. Gephardt has the unions, Lieberman has the prestige from his run in 2000. Kerry has nothing except his electability. Right now, Dean is looking a lot more electable in both Iowa and New Hampshire.

If Gephardt takes S. Carolina. Kerry, Graham and Edwards are KIA.

I think that Kerry's lurch look may be a genetic defect. When I did a search of Lurch photos, to my surprise, there were many Americans with the caption Lurch under their pic, who actually looked like Lurch. My apologies to Kerry, if it is, in fact, a genetic defect.

I just heard his speech. He made what I suppose he thought was a little joke about making his first speech to people with fans, and how he almost thought they were gonna have a little baptist revival.
How Patronizing
Just one more elitist Yankee slam at Southern culture and herritage.
Laughing at the yokels who live in a part of the country where it gets hot in the summer.

Why doesn't SC toss him out? Wasn't Ketchup part of the group calling for Lott to step down because of a "perceived" error in a toast Lott made to the retiring senator from SC?

Speaking of cover here is a question I've had about
Batchelor & Alexander for a long time.
Are those guys gay or are they just auditioning
to do the voices of some very gay cartoon characters?

I'm a regular listener also. Here’s an article with their bios (and the answer to your gay cartoon character question).

They're creepy and they're kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They're all together ooky,
The Kerry Family.

His hair is sort of funny
He'll marry anybody
So long as she has money
The Addams Family.

(Neat)
(Sweet)
(Petite)

She inherited some ketchup
She doesn't ever shut up
You never know when she'll blow up
The Kerry Family

So get a witches shawl on
A broomstick you can crawl on
We're gonna pay a call on
The Kerry Family.

It's not a bad show, but they do pad it a lot with those sound-collage segments.

Anybody got a picture of Kerry throwing away "his" decorations? (Later, it turned out, that in a Clintonesqe move to preserve his future political viability, he had actually not thrown away his decorations, but just some he picked up somewhere, or so he says, was he lying then, or now, or both?)
