  • Klondike Bill, a professional wrestler, consumed two complete dinners in the one hour time limit back in the 1960s.

Some Rules 72oz. Steak

Rule # 1 is to have fun. We really want you to win! The $50 dinner consist of a baked potato, salad, shrimp cocktail, roll, and a 72-ounce top sirloin steak. You must sit at the designated table in our dining room. You may not leave the table for any reason once the contest starts. No one may assist you in any way (such as cutting up your meal). You must complete the dinner in 1 hour (if you can't do the meal in an hour, you ain't going get it done in 2 hours anyway). You may not share your meal even if you don't complete the dinner (like take it back to your table to be shared by any folks you may have invited to cheer you on). If you get sick (its been know to happen) the contest is over, period. You can order the steak cooked anyway you want. We will allow you a sample bite (small) prior to the start of the timer to make sure it is cooked to your satisfaction and the taste meets with your approval. Then we start the timer for one hour. You do not have to eat the fat or gristle (if you can find any), but we must judge this. Again, we want you to win but we do know our meats and will judge accordingly. The contest is just that, a contest. The steak is not offered on our menu as a meal. We do not allow the dinner to be ordered as a meal (unless you want to spend $200). It takes us a little more than a half an hour to cook the steak and it is available 365 days a year from 8:00am to 9:30pm. Enough with the rules! Refer to rule #1 - HAVE FUN!

Of course, when you take the 72oz. challenge at home, you don't have to limit yourself to one hour...and, you can share it with your friends and family. Most importantly, you now gain the bragging rights to say you too have savored the taste of this Texas-sized steak.

Had it cooked medium rare, as always, and just ate it like a normal meal mixing between the potato, bread, coffee, etc.

I didn't try to rush, just ate normal, but I was real hungry not having eaten since lunch in Los Angeles the day before. I had stopped in Flagstaff and had about 4 cups of coffee though.

I might add that I had some kind of training in 1953 in high school when because of my age I had to quickly gain 20# (180-200) in a month in order to be able to play varsity football so I not only had my mother make me steak, potatoes, and a big salad for breakfast I would go to a place called Rands Roundup in Glendale at about 10 and eat an all you can eat dinner and stay until about 2 in the morning eating breakfast for the same money when they changed over at midnight about 3 times a week for $3.75.

I'm a grazer so I have no advice here but the suggestion that I have seen that I liked the best was the one to have PETA there. That would really be motivation for me :')

We had something like that around here. It was called a "Ramalamadingdong." Twenty four (24) scoops of ice cream and 6 Ding Dongs.

Keep it simple.

For the 2 weeks preceding your birthday, eat ONE BIG MEAL PER DAY.
I prefer the mid-day meal, whatever it is called in your locality. ( Lunch, Dinner, Supper, etc..)
I usually skip Breakfast, and eat a moderate evening meal.
Try to include plenty of fiber, and minimize the actual meat in the diet for that 2 week period.
Skip that Big Meal the day of your test...
Schedule your steak dinner for evening, you should be good and hungry by then.

Have the Steak at least Medium-Well, preferably Well-done.
I like mine with a little charcoal crispy taste to the surface, not quite dry inside, very little juice, no pink.

DO NOT use any sauce, butter, or anything extra than what is placed before you.
DO NOT DRINK anything. There is plenty of water already in the potato, and other sides you will have to eat.

Start with the steak, and eat in manageable pieces, interspersed with side dishes only when necessary.
Your mission is to finish the steak first, the side dishes are only there to assist you, and occassionally lubricate the gullet..

Eat at a comfortable rate, one that pleases you.
I usually eat somewhat ravenously at first, slowing to a more civilized pace about midway.

Finish with the side dishes.
Personally, I would ask for an alternative to the shrimp cocktail, I hate shrimp.

Ask for a small bowl of ice cream when finished.
My personal preference is french vanilla.

Me and my little brother were driving from Washington, DC to Las Cruces, NM in 1977. He was 18 and I was 24. He was a growing boy, an extremly big eater and knew he could do it. We left Oklahoma heading west around 9:00, after a big breakfast, then started seeing signs about the Steak House in Abileen. He kept saying, I know I can do it sister, please stop so I can try. I said that no you just had a huge breakfast and it is only 12:00?? I knew, because I was paying the food bills on the trip and the gas bills. But he begged and begged told me that he could do it, so we stopped and he tried, and tried and tried. If it hadn't been for the salad and baked potato and roll and the 1 hour time limit, I think he could have done it. HAHAHAHAHA We had left-over steak for the rest of the trip, and some at home in New Mexico. Sorry Randy, I just had to tell this one on you, Happy Birthday.

Wow! I didn't know that about the burger place! I am flying out there Sept 9th and may see if it's still there! I like the restaurants up around Government Camp, too (Log Cabin). That area has changed immensely.

I didn't know the Country Kitchen had been there that long.

Farrells Ice Cream Parlor (used to go to the original one in Portland, OR) had a dish of ice cream called "The Zoo". TWENTY POUNDS of ice cream! It was great!!! My dad would take me there every birthday as a kid for one!!

Looks like you got much great advice already, especially about eating it quickly.... I have read that the human brain is actually 15 minutes too late in telling a person that their stomach is full :-)
