California: Labor a recall loser? Vote might complicate move for more power

Los Angeles Daily News ^ | Aug 31, 2003 | Rick Orlov
Posted on 08/31/2003 2:58 PM PDT by John Jorsett

By all accounts, this would have been considered a banner year for organized labor -- lots of union jobs building schools and other public works projects, union-backed candidates winning most Los Angeles and statewide offices, Valley secession crushed.

Instead, Miguel Contreras, one of the most-powerful union leaders in the country, finds himself worrying over the potential loss of a longtime ally in the upcoming recall election of Gov. Gray Davis and the impact that will have on organized labor....

Davis, Candidates Criticize Schwarzenegger on Immigration, Taxes

AP ^ | 8/31/03 | Beth Fouhy
Posted on 08/31/2003 3:06 PM PDT by JeanS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Arnold Schwarzenegger's views on the economy and immigration came under attack Sunday in California's gubernatorial recall campaign, but the GOP front-runner continued to keep a low profile over the Labor Day weekend.

Gov. Gray Davis jabbed at Schwarzenegger's lack of specifics on his economic plan, while state Sen. Tom McClintock, the action star's chief Republican rival, chided him for failing to take a no-new-taxes pledge. Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, the only prominent Democrat seeking to succeed Davis if he is recalled, attacked him as anti-immigrant....

California: In face of recall, Davis has finally started to govern

Fresno Bee ^ | Aug 31, 2003 | Jim Boren
Posted on 08/31/2003 4:03 PM PDT by John Jorsett

The fax machine at my favorite newspaper has been jammed the past several weeks with press releases from Gov. Gray Davis' office. All of a sudden, he's making judicial appointments, signing consumer privacy legislation, announcing flood control and ecosystem grants, discussing school reform. If the volume of paper coming out of the governor's office is any indication, Davis has been working 24/7.

That would be a refreshing change to a governing style that until recently had been more about catering to his special-interest pals than dealing with the state's most serious problems. But now Davis is engaged in the affairs of California in a way we haven't seen during his time as governor....

Davis has backed gay issues, but in S.F., that hasn't yielded strong support as he fights for his political life.
By Marjie Lundstrom -- Bee Columnist
Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Sunday, August 31, 2003

Another in a series of occasional stories by columnist Marjie Lundstrom and photographer José Luis Villegas, who are crisscrossing the state to find out how Californians feel about the historic recall election

Executive Director Thom Lynch says the San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center may sponsor a forum on "why the recall matters to the gay community," because "there are not enough people paying attention to it."

Contradictions abound for Schwarzenegger

San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | 08-31-03
Posted on 08/31/2003 8:38 AM PDT by Brian S

By John Marelius UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

When are special interests not special interests? When is an outsider actually an insider?

Why is a fearless "Terminator" reluctant to share the stage with a handful of second-tier politicians or discuss his policies with reporters?

And why is a popular action hero running a barely active campaign for governor in terms of the number of public appearances?

These are among the contradictions that in just a few weeks have come to characterize the political debut of Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has turned the Oct. 7 recall election of Gov. Gray Davis into an international media spectacle....

Schwarzenegger challenged over old interview

San Francisco Chronical ^ | August 30, 2003 | Carla Marinucci, Lance Williams, Chronicle Staff Writers
Posted on 08/31/2003 12:39 PM PDT by PeoplesRep_of_LA

Arnold Schwarzenegger was asked on Wednesday by a conservative radio host to talk about his racy 1977 Oui magazine interview -- detailing drug use and group sex. The GOP gubernatorial candidate responded with a laugh, "I never lived my life to be a politician. I never lived my life to be the governor of California."

"Obviously, I've made statements that were ludicrous and crazy and outrageous and all those things, because that's the way I always was," he said.

A day later, he was asked about it at a press conference. "I have no idea what you're talking about," he told reporters. "I have no memory of any of the articles I did 20 or 30 years ago." ....

Public employees rip off taxpayers Public employees bite hands that feed them

By Chris Weinkopf Staff Writer

Back when California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley certified the petitions for an election to recall Gov. Gray Davis, Big Labor responded with a swift decree: No Democrat could run to replace him.

The most powerful force in state and local politics had spoken. Any Democrat so brazen as to defy his party's principal financial backer on this issue could forget about seeing another penny of union money ever again....

Stop Bustamente’s Political Gouging(He wants more government regulation on gas)!

Michigan Libertarian Newsletter ^ | 9/8/03 | Todd Andrew Barnett
Posted on 08/31/2003 3:12 PM PDT by William Creel

California Lieutenant Governor and gubernatorial candidate Cruz Bustamente obviously thinks he’s a man on a crusade to protect consumers from “greedy” oil company executives. This same man, by the way, has publicly declared his support for troubled Democratic Governor Gray Davis who is being recalled by the voters due to his disastrous fiscal spending policies (a $38 billion deficit plaguing the state!) and his reckless intervention in the state’s energy market (an intervention which resulted in the recent California Energy Crisis)....

McClintock was shown on local tv news, with a group of Blacks, explaining to them why he supports maintaining racial data in California.

Ms. Huffington is running ads saying how teachers should be paid more than prison guards. GO Huffington, GO - - pick off some of those teacher votes /LOL...I guess the teachers forgot to give Davis enough $$$ to get the 35% pay increase the prison guards got.

As always, I'm staying with McClintock UNLESS it looks like Bustamante could really win.

Watching closely to see how well this works in your state. We have a Governor that not only looks like Janet Reno but thinks like her too! She has to go but the sad part is she got elected the same as Gray out!

Meanwhile, I'm betting on more attempts to bolix it up by the Atheist/Agnostic Communist LIBERAL Union (ACLU).

Absent actor bashed from all sides Davis, Bustamante, McClintock assail Schwarzenegger

With actor Arnold Schwarzenegger sitting out the media frenzy of the recall race for a third straight day, his chief Republican rival blasted him as a tax-and-spend liberal, while top Democrats called him anti-immigrant and a hypocrite for breaking a campaign promise not to accept special-interest money.
