On August 27, Amina Lawal, a 32-year-old Nigerian single mother, sat in an Islamic sharia court in Katsina state in northern Nigeria and nursed her two-year-old daughter, Wasila. Wasila had been born over nine months after Amina was divorced and, in Nigeria's Islamic courts, this is taken to be prima facie evidence that Amina committed adultery.

If her appeal of this conviction is denied, she will be buried up to her chest, and the surrounding throng will throw stones at her until she is dead. The stones used must not be so small that they will inflict no damage, nor so large that they will kill her too quickly. She must die slowly and painfully in front of the crowd.

Of course, in any adultery case, there must also be a man involved, and Amina testified that she had not willingly committed adultery but had been raped. However, to convict a man of rape, Nigeria's sharia courts usually require that there be four male Muslim witnesses. Though the courts are not yet clear on this, it may be (following precedent in other Islamist jurisdictions such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Sudan, and Pakistan) that up to eight male non-Muslim witnesses, or 16 female non-Muslim witnesses, would also suffice for the conviction of a male Muslim. However, since Nigerian adulterers and rapists — like those in other parts of the world — do not usually perform in front of crowds, the man has been acquitted, and Amina and her daughter stand alone....

Yet, terrible as is Amina's plight, her situation is but a symptom of a larger problem afflicting Nigeria and other African nations. Nigeria — along with Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa — is subject to major campaigns by radical Islamists to spread their ideology. The country is, as was repeatedly emphasized by Osama bin Laden, an explicit target for Islamic extremists, often funded by the Saudis. When extreme sharia was introduced in Nigeria in 1999, Saudi, Pakistani, and Palestinian representatives gathered to express their support...

Harded headed international-relations theorists regard Africa as largely irrelevant to America's interests, and the possibility of Nigerian international terrorism seems remote. But the possibility of now-rampant Filipino and Indonesian terrorism also looked remote a few years ago.

the example of other countries in the Middle East, in Africa, and in Asia suggests a good empirical guide, one rooted in the very nature of their regimes: Where women get stoned for adultery, anti-Americanism and terrorism will appear. If we fail to oppose radical Islam in Africa now, our overstretched troops may well have to do so a few years from now.

I think it draws a logical conclusion.

Who would have thought that prior to the World Trade Center Bombing of 1993 and the OKC Bombing of 1995 that the Philippines would have served as a center of terrorism posing a threat to the US ?

I didn't mean the thinking falls apart, just the writing. It was almost like the author was writing away, and then suddenly realized he had a deadline, and rushed through the last third of the article.

The philipinos have had problem with Muslims for generations. The religion seems completely upposed to living in peace with others. Look at how it grew in our own country, based on alienated blacks in the 1960s a most discordant time.

That's why it's fitting that we call it, with sarcasm, the Religion of Peace. People who do so sincerely are being either foolish or disingenuous. But I'll still vote for W for re-election.

Everyone should click on the link and see that presentation. I am so honored that you would post it to the thread I started, and I am awed that it is still out there on the internet.

I stumbled onto it a few days after Sept 11th and it is truly a work of art. It captures the horrible feelings of that day better than anything similar I have seen.

To this day I cry every time I see it. And the images have become permenently associated with the song used, so if I ever hear it in a store or from a jukebox, I remember. But then again, I am not about to forget, so it is ok.

It's even worse than it sounds. In the absence of male witnesses, a complaint of rape by a woman is considered admission of the guilt of adultery.

But it gets worse. Muslim law specifies the witnesses must be adult males of "impeccable character", aka pious Muslims. Then they must witness the offender actually place the head of the penis into the vagina. Talk about a tough standard for a woman to prove rape and save herself from self-confessed adultery!

That is not a "radical" view of Islam. It is the mainstream view, upheld by the Koran and related authoritative Islamic teachings.

There is no such thing as "moderate mainstream Islam". According to the Koran, there are only True Muslims, Muslim apostates (punishable by death), or Infidels of various stripes (also punishable by either death if they will not convert or permanent second-class status with few rights under Islamic Law).

Yes, in fact this goal had been stated by Ibrahim Cooper an African-American and the talking head of CAIR most often seen on TV. CAIR, for all its TV granted "respectabiltiy" is widely acknowledged on both left and right as being extreme in their views. He actually said that while he wouldn't try and bring it around, he wouldn't mind if it happened.

As of right now I beleive we should rule no measures out in the ongoing battle against radical Islam. Including amending the Constitution to prevent/contain the practice of that religion in this country.
