This Aug. 23, 2003 IKONOS satellite image shows the aftermath of the explosion that destroyed the Brazilian VLS-1 V-03 rocket designed to carry two satellites into orbit. The Aug. 22 explosion killed 21 people after an engine ignited by mistake while on its launch pad. The rocket exploded at its jungle base of Alcantara, in the northeastern state of Maranhao, Brazil.
The image shows the burned vegetation and the collapsed launch pad. A before image taken on Sept. 5, 2001 is also available for comparison.
The image may be used to support reporting of this story in print, broadcast and web. Mandatory photo credit must be given to "Space Imaging."

There's a large pic at the link. Damn shame what happened.

I'm relying on the wizardry and generosity of a fellow freeper to host the image. As can be seen, I can't seem to even put up a link properly.

It looks like the bad guy's secret rocket facility from a James Bond movie.

Neat pic. Serious bummer about the premature ignition.

Our space program has had its fits and starts, as well. It's all part of the learning process.

Yes I've seen those. Amazing testament to our technology, compassion and downright dangerousness. :)

Amazing testament to our technology, compassion and downright dangerousness. :)Excellent thought but you used the wrong word (dangerousness)...
the word is...
lethality.

Damn waste of their nation's talent. Lula should have lit the fuse himself. Shame to "throw out" a perfectly good Brasilian...
Meanwhile, millions are still living in corrugated steel shanties with no supporting infrastructure wondering why Lula is building a space program, a nuclear program and an army...
But you know, it's sinking in and working to an end. Many Brasilians are excited about this. A space program is an exciting thing after all. It's certainly serving to rally many of them. Yet with Lula, I imagine the next step is, "See we did the space thing, see that cliff over there? Let's get a running start..."
Never trust a Communist.
Brasil, ainda quebrando meu coracao..
Thanks for the tag.
I called my friends in Sao Paulo the other day. I love them like family, even though we've been through the discussion "So what did this Clinton guy do that was wrong?" Any way, my "Brasilian Father" took this pretty hard. I can't help but feel bad about it. I'm still PO'd about this thing being a major diversion from addressing the real problems, though. Not that'd I'd take a chance and say it to him over their phone system...

It's not really a shame. It's good. They have a power mad crazy leftwing thug in charge of Brazil these days and it's just a matter of time until he and his gang get the idea they can threaten the USA with nuclear tipped missiles.
Every delay in Brazil's rocket program is a step forward for the USA as it prepares a reliable anti-ballistic missile defense system.
Let's get that in place first before we commiserate with the Brazilians.

These are pretty cool too. In the after shot, everything seems to be covered with a layer of dust. I suppose that's from the dust/sand storm in March.
