The entire 1990s were a wasted opportunity vis a vis Russia. Upon the "collapse" of the USSR we ought to have said "well then, fine, in return for our help in building a Western style nation, we will insist on full decommunization, an immediate severance of all ties with terrorist, rogue, communist and otherwise anti Western nations, the convention of a special tribunal by a TBD Federal Russian court of applicable KGB, Communist and military personnel who ran gulags, slaughtered the conquered and terrorized dissidents, and, immediate open access to all military sites especially Yamantau Mountain. Do you accept these terms?" That would have saved us quite a bit of money and prevented quite a bit of nonsense. They either would have agreed to it, in which case we would have bent over backwards with help, or they would have immediately gone back to the Brezhnevian stance, in which case we would not have dug ourselves into the hole we are in. We would not have drawn down, we would not have falsely rewarded ourselves with any so called peace dividend, and we would have taken a very hard line from that point forward against terror, rogues and satellites. Why have we so thoroughly overcomplicated and FUBARed our geopolitical strategy? Old proverb of Venice "happy is the city which in a time of peace prepares for war."

From orbat.com

Jang of Pakistan reports a spokesman for President Karzai says 3 Pakistani military officers have been arrested by the US FBI in Afghanistan's Zabul district where Afghan, US, and coalition forces are engaged in a major battle with Taliban; Pakistan has denied any arrests; the spokesman says the officers have been taken to a US interrogation center in Baluchistan and that the world needs to know the result of the interrogation [Orbat.com comment: though buried deep in Jang's story list, this is a very serious development if true; we wonder if the story has any connection to the BBC report we carried yesterday saying Pakistan had arrested 3 army officers for links to the Taliban - for Pakistan to say it had arrested the men would save face]

Hmmm, Paki soldiers and officers with AQTalib.

Must be time to send them a billion more or so to get them to cooperate with the US.

you forgot the sarcasm tag. Tell me again why we don't eliminate this regime, as per the criteria for the axis of the vile:
1. run by tinpot dictator. check
2. wmd (nukes, chem, biological courtesy the friendly chicoms and nks), check
3. supports terroristas, check
4. psycho, double check

Babs Streisand belts out "Memories....".... but I digress. I do find it distressing that the standard line regarding Pakistan is essentially taken verbatim from the old Northern Tier playbook. While that was all well and good during the era of the U2 overflights and the quasi Communist Nehruists, we somehow dug ourselves a rut on this one. Firstly, from the middle 80s onward and from the early 90s in a big way the marriage of Islamabad and Beijing was unmistakable. Once the Soviets changed strategies vis a vis Afgahnistan (note, I did not write "lost") it no longer made sense to run ops out of Pakistan. Then as if a Godsend, in the 90s India turned to the Right and kicked the Nehruists out into the street. By the late 90s there was zero justification for any coddling of Pakistan if anything we ought to have started a dirty war back then to make changes. Then right after 9/11 India said "let's partner" and instead we went through diploatic contortions and bribery to muscle Pakistan into tolerating some level of relationship with us. Blunders upon blunders. So, now that Clinton's been out for well over two years, isn't it time to clean out Foggy Bottom not to mention the entirety of Executive hired minions and bring in some adults to run the show?

Would love to see it, the only problem is that I am still waiting. I am afraid that their still are no adults in this whole thing thus I don't foresee a change. No one wants to look at ISI ties with the PRC if not our right control by the PRC. Massive military exercises(if looking out over the last year) in this entire area. Not a peep from our 'fearless' leaders. I am beyond sick at this point.

Quite true, the chicoms are pushing antagonism away from themselves. Remember there was a crisis regarding the Navy aricraft inChina and Dubya was getting quite belligerent with them, then blam, 9/11 and we turned our focus elsewhere. While I'm not saying the chicoms planned it, they might have just pushed it along a bit, let the superpower waste it's strength fighting pipsqueaks while the chicoms build up economic and military might.

As regards Pack, well, as Disraeli(?) said, 'there are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests' and if we forget that and keep up the old cold War rivalries we're going to lose, and badly.

As I said earlier, we had a great chance to become friends with the Russians and help them get over their Soviet past and we blew it, badly. We worked well in getting Germany to get over theNazis but then we had great presidents not a blunder in chief like clintack. And now, in the past few month's I read about both Russia and India signing pacts and making nice to China.

And I don't blame them -- if you've got a really strong neighbour who has fought against you and against whom you may not win by yourself, you have two options:
1. Get a superpower friend,
2. Make nice

Since we've not shown a great deal of commitment to India, they're making nice with their foe, and ditto for the Russians.

This is insane, in the event of a potential conflict with the chicoms we'd like these two to be on our side, right now it seems like they'd be neutral or, if we keep buying chicom stuff at Walmartz and paying that into the military fund, making the chicoms more powerful than the Indians and Russians combined, then they'll have to go along with the stronger kid, the chicoms.

How is this gang of Islamonuts going to avoid being nuked ?

I just don't see this insanity continuing for much longer.

It is also difficult to see how a missile defense could serve to deter Palistan, even if India developed one.

All in all the subcontinent looks like it is headed for its moment in history.

The Indians need to have some serious tete-a-tetes with us or the Israelis and make sure that their SF are up to snuff.

Sonehow, someway, the Islamic bomb must be neutralized.

These guys in Pakistan are nuts.

Well at least the Saudi Marine Hymm won't be "Onward Christian Soldiers" anymore.

They can get the Pakistanis dying for them now.

Too many good Americans' lives were squandered for those inbred camel-humpers.

Any speculation on what these security related projects could be?

I think they're "askeered" of all those American soldiers to the north of them with their guns pointed back.

I also think it's cover for activating all the "special projects" requiring Pakistani expertise, including their Chinese missles. Maybe the Pakistanis will bring along some special sauce for the nosecones of the missiles.

Another sign that the House of Saud is gonna fall.

THings seem to be moving fine in the military cooperation between the three countries.

Watch for some sweet invective from the Pakistani press when Sharon arrives there September 11.
