Hillary: She's Now Open to 2004 Prez Bid

New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has subtly but carefully altered her stance on running for president in 2004.

Senator Clinton has made some revealing statements while on her book tour in Europe that indicate she is moving to a 2004 run.

During her trip to London this weekend, Mrs. Clinton hinted during a television interview that a 2004 run "might happen."

Appearing Friday on BBC Channel 4's "Richard and Judy Show," Mrs. Clinton was pressed on whether she might challenge President Bush as early as next year.

"You never know what might happen," she told the TV duo, after first dismissing as "rumors" reports that she was considering a run in 2004.

The day before, Mrs. Clinton was challenged by BCC radio interviewer Martha Kearney, who complained that the top Democrat's often-repeated answer that she has "no intention" of running for president in either 2004 or 2008 "doesn't really rule anything out, does it?"

"Well, but it is as close as I can come," Mrs. Clinton responded.

In previous interviews with American reporters, the former first lady had been unequivocal about not running in 2004. "Absolutely, I'd say no," she told ABC's Barbara Walters, who asked last month if she'd accept a draft.

Pressed on her plans for 2008, Mrs. Clinton dispensed with her usual "no intention" denial altogether, telling Kearney, "Well, 2008 is a long - you know, you cover politics - that's an eternity in American politics. But I think that the role I'm playing, trying to bring attention to issues, trying to get people to focus on what's at stake, is a very appropriate role for me."

Just three weeks ago, when asked by ABC's Barbara Walters if she might run in 2004, Mrs. Clinton's denial was rock solid.

But sinking poll numbers for President Bush, continuing weakness in the U.S. economy, and the failure of a clear Democratic front-runner to emerge -- all may be factors leading Mrs. Clinton to re-think her plans for 2004.

I predicted on several threads before that if Bush seems unbeatable it will be Gore. If he seems beatable it will be Hillary.

These are the only two candidates that can excite the largest numbers of democrats.

Actually, I want to se Hillary run. Talk about a contrast.

The thought of Hillary as President with full use of the Patriot Act is what really scares the hell out of me.

I work with many democrat women who wouldn't vote for her either, and I live in NY. She hasn't done squat for the state.

Why is it that every time we get into the thick of an election cycle, angry guys stick their heads out of the FR closets and start bemoaning how "women" are going to vote? This is closely followed by a wish to curtail women's voting rights. By the same reasoning, blacks would lose their voting rights, too, but the AWM's don't have the courage to put that opinion in print.

This makes me feel sick to my stomach. Whether she wins or loses a real nightmare is about to unfold.

Interesting possibility.

Gore would certainly become,in my opinion, something you scrape off the bottom of your shoe if he ran with the Beast.

Hillary has a cameo in this satire. Please read it if you get a chance, and let me know what you think.

JUst for the record. Though I has been critical of Bush's handling of the economy, if Hillary runs Bush can ship all jobs to China, kick a puppy, smoke dope, and suddenly produce his mark of the beast and he still will have my VOTE. ANYONE BUT HILLARY!!!!!!

Hillary Clinton along with her husband should be in jail; not running for President of the United States.

Richards... oh, yes, the "silver spoon" remark. Bush is a gentleman, and that will play in his favor, no doubt.

Let's just look at the most RECENT election of 2002 - dems were out there on the alphabet channels claiming they were going to pick up some seats and that history has always shown the party in the WH losing seats in the mid-term election...Well, Republicans ERASED history and slammed some new stats into the books with their pickups in BOTH the house AND the senate! I predict that if Hillary runs, BUSH wins BIG and so do the REPUBLICANS because EVERY republican will turn out to VOTE AGAINST her - bring her on!

I'd add "get caught in bed with a dead woman AND a live boy" to you list.

Heck, I'll even split my straight Libertarian ticket!

You might be right. In this state at least one of the biggest problems we have is getting Republicans to even turn out to vote. If the majority of them did things would be quite different here...
