I check their sign up date too. I do want to say that I have posted "be careful what you say" for the same reason. I'm speaking generally here: say what you want, but if you can't proove it, label it as opinion. This better protects both the poster and Jim Robinson...and this wonderful place is his "doins" -- he deserves that much respect from us. I've not "talked" with him, but I'd love to someday. I'm sure he's a great guy.

But most of all, work and pray for Terri and millions like her that can't speak for themselves! We can do this! We are intelligent, informed, concerned citizens. Let's get that word out! Wouldn't it be great if every American knew all about this case?!? Perhaps then it would be harder for these things to happen. At least I would like to think so.

There is a motion to disqualify Judge Greer. The information contained in that motion is legitmate.

Thanks for the good news, Kimmie.

#2112 - "Patients with degenerative or metabolic disorders or congenital malformations who remain in a persistent vegatative state for several months are unlikely to recover consciousness. The life span of adults and children in such a state is substantially reduced. For most such patients, life expectancy ranges from 2 to 5 years; survival beyond 10 years is unusual."

Then Terri is THE most unusual! Why isn't her case in medical journals around the world? For back on January 24, 2001, Felos declared in Judge Greer's court that in mid-1996, CAT scans revealed her brain to a severely abnormal structure. "At this point, much of her cerebral cortex is simply gone and has been replaced by spinal fluid."

Excellent post, MHG!!!

*****"Then Terri is THE most unusual! Why isn't her case in medical journals around the world?" *****

Isn't that the truth?

I just can't help but wonder where Terri would be in her progress, had the court taken Michael out of the picture years ago. Even now...give the poor woman two *solid* years of PT/OT/Speech/Music Therapy/outings in the sunshine/pet therapy/visits from prayer groups & clergy, etc...Why not admit Terri to a rehab facility outside of Florida; one that promotes overall wellness? Then, after two years of giving Terri what she needs, return to court and provide a judge with the results.

I'd like to see Michael in a bed for ten years, with no stimulation to his brain, no visitors, no exercise or ambulation, etc...

(stepping off my box)...how's everyone doing? I've been dealing with a lot on my plate right now, but I wanted to check in and see what's been going on today.

Hope you're feeling a little bit better, Kimmie7. :)

Other than my, um, 'bum bum' I'm okay. Just still dealing with a bit of fever.

*****"Then Terri is THE most unusual! Why isn't her case in medical journals around the world?" *****

You're right...instead her case will enter the lawbooks. Either way it turns out. Sad.

You know, I remember when I was working in the nursing home. One of the other CNAs was out sick and I covered her patients as well as mine. I noticed one lady whose feet were beginning to atrophy -- curl downward due to the constant pressure of the blankets on her toes. I mentioned it to the charge nurse and she put a board (specifically made for that purpose) at the foot of the bed to aleviate the pressure as well as advising PT to the doctor of record. I got congratulated. Not to toot my own horn, but to point out the difference in care... I could NOT work for any place that would starve some people to death, while trumpeting their compassion to the world. Real compassion is a cool hand to a fevered brow, a sip of water to parched lips, a patient care-giver spoon feeding a patient who long ago forgot who she was. Starvation and compassion are never to be used in the same sentence.

Glad you are feeling better and back to posting! I found this at internationaltaskforce.or/fctaf.htm
International Task Force
on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide
The following are the questions asked most frequently about what has become known as "artificial feeding:"
Q: What is "artificial feeding"?
A: "Artificial feeding" is not a medical term. It's a catch phrase that is generally thought to mean food and fluids provided by means of tube. In fact, in court cases, expert witnesses have testified that "artificial feeding" can include spoon feeding and that the food brought on a tray to a patient in a convalescent home can be considered "medical treatment" because the patient's diet must receive physician approval.
(2) Q: Why prolong the lives of people who are severely brain damaged or are in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) or coma? Wouldn’t it be better to let them die a peaceful death?
A: First, let’s look at what is meant by PVS and coma. News accounts often confuse the two terms, sometimes using them interchangeably. They’re not the same. PVS is a term used to describe someone who is awake but unaware. The person has no apparent ability to understand or respond. Coma, on the other hand, is a sleeplike state from which the person cannot be wakened. Often these terms are used inaccurately.
A person who is in a coma or persistent vegetative state can’t say she's thirsty. Similarly, a severely brain damaged person may be unable to express himself. Such individuals won’t even understand what’s happening. They'll simply feel thirst and, within five to 21 days, they will die of dehydration. (Although it's often said that a person dies of starvation and dehydration. Actually, when food and fluids are removed, the person dies from dehydration, not starvation.)Removing their food and water isn’t "letting them die." It’s making them die. Nor is this type of death "putting them out of their misery," as some would say. Instead it’s putting them into misery - the misery of dying in an excruciating manner. How could dying of thirst possibly be considered a peaceful death?
Q: Aren't painkillers given to prevent suffering during the dehydration?
A: Yes. This is often done. The fact remains, however, that the pain is caused by denying food and water to the person.
Q: Is taking away artificial feeding the same as euthanasia?
A: Taking away food and water, no matter how they are provided, is euthanasia if the purpose of doing so is to cause death.

As you may already know, a hearing is scheduled for Thursday, September 11, 2003, at the courthouse in Clearwater, Florida. This hearing is to be at 10.00am (GMT -5) and, at that time, Judge Greer is expected to schedule a date when Terri Schindler-Schiavo's feeding tube will be removed. When that is done, Terri will die from dehydration and/or starvation. Though the attorney representing Terri's husband, Michael Schiavo, contends that this is a peaceful and painless death, the truth is that Terri will be made to suffer tremendously. You can read more here.

Demonstrators are expected to convene that day, prior to the proceedings. If you are in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, you are welcomed to join in. It is of the utmost importance that any demonstration be a peaceful one. The courthouse is located at the intersection of Court Street and Fort Harrison Avenue in downtown Clearwater, Florida. If you are able to attend, bring signs. Bring water as it will be warm. Plan on media asking you questions. Try to answer the questions of passersby, if you can. Direct people to www.terrisfight.org if they don't understand the case. There is a public sidewalk directly in front of the courthouse, facing Fort Harrison Avenue. Likewise, there is a public sidewalk directly across the road. Traffic, both auto and foot, is high from the hours of 7.00am until 9.30am. You will be seen and heard. It is not appropriate nor recommended that you assemble on the campus of the court complex itself. Only public encroachment such as sidewalks. Understanding that everyone has obligations and work, if you can attend, your presence is appreciated.

There is a pending petition to federal courts that will be refiled before the week is out. This petition argues that Terri's civil liberties have been denied by her husband. If the federal judge accepts jurisdiction of the case, Terri's case will move to the federal courts and out of the present venue of the 6th circuit court of Pinellas County.

Additionally, the attorney representing Terri's immediate family has filed a Motion to Disqualify Judge George Greer based on evidence that he has spoken openly about Terri's case to confidantes and media - without litigating attorneys present.

There is no guarantee that Judge Greer will step down, nor that the federal courts will accept jurisdiction of Terri's case. With that in mind, the hearing on September 11 could be the final decision in this young woman's life.

If you have questions, suggestions or require more information, please do not hesitate to email me directly. Please also feel free to circulate this email.

On behalf of Terri Schindler-Schiavo and the family who loves her, thank you.

Great news. Who brought the motion, do you know?

Been out of touch this weekend (busy with kids and a zoo trip, a barbeque, a blcok party) and now my six year old has a 102 fever, yeeha. Trying to catch up on this long thread. Hope you are feeling better in your - ahem - hind parts. :)

Are "we" (or Floriduh Voter) getting too intense for you?
Perhaps you might want to self-evaluate why you think internet, or any other voices should be muted, on behalf of Terri Schiavo?
Are we rude and boorish?
You do understand this is an actual real live woman we are fighting the state for her right to continue to exist, dont you?
Nothing thereotical or abstract is going on here.
That is a larger concern, but secondary to the main concern.
Terri Schiavo is messily alive, not some abstract debating theory.

you do unto me"

There is a motion to disqualify Judge Greer

Is this a motion from Terri's attorneys or what? Who does this motion go to? He is obviously biased in favor of euthanasia, he being a physically-fit marathon runner with little sympathy for the infirmed.

In the popular film now "Seabiscuit," the trainer says that we should not throw away a living thing becausde it is "banged up a little." Poor Terri, so far from justice, so close to God.

"I'm talking to the doctors, seeing the patient, talking to the parents and siblings and trying to determine if he's ever expressed any wishes that would have bearing on the situation," Pickford said in an interview. "Both sides are so far apart."

This is from another post at http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/978529/posts

It struck me at how this Judge differs from the Judge in Terri's case. He seems to be at least attempting to make an effort.

The motion can be viewed here http://www.terrisfight.org/downloads/Motion%20to%20Disqualify%20090503.pdf

The Motion was filed by Larry Crow, apparrantly co-counsel to Pat Anderson. It's very telling, and very well written.
