August 28, 2003 -- Three thousand city public school teachers have just been booted because they flunked competency exams or failed to meet other criteria to earn their state license, Department of Education officials said yesterday.

The bombshell was disclosed as scores of teachers who failed the tests - some a dozen or more times - cried racism at a rally in City Hall Park, charging the exams are culturally biased against blacks and Hispanics.

I wonder how Asian teachers fared in taking this "culturally biased" test.

If the test truly is racist, like these people claim, very few Asians would pass, as their culture is far different from "white" culture, even compared to black and hispanic culture.

Is there any doubt where our society is going?

Teaching has always been rife with cronyism. In the olden days, however, one's cronies actually knew quite a lot. Today, in schools all over the country, teaching is just a parking lot for ignorant AAAs with fake degrees.

Yes, public schools today exist not to educate, but to serve teachers and administrators with exorbidant salaries and a bloated staff, and the Democrat Party via donations and endorsements.

Sure it's discrimination. The tests discriminate between competent and incompetent teachers.

From the Test Outline:
>* assessing the likely effects of human activities or trends (described in written or graphic form) on the local, regional, or global environment
* assessing ways in which major transformations related to human work, thought, and belief (e.g., industrialization, the scientific revolution, the development and spread of Islam) have affected human society<
Many Freepers would fail these areas simply because our answers would not be sufficiently PC.

I agree. Lack of a Master's Degree in Education is not the problem

It would be interesting to see where this group of teachers
went to college. What school produces this shameful bunch?
Massachusetts published a list. Maybe New York will do the same. The colleges ought to know and so should the tution paying parents of prospective students.

How many teachers are there in the NYC district?

I hate news stories like this when they provide no frame of reference. Does the 3,000 teachers represent 1%, 5%, 10% of the total teachers?

***Three thousand city public school teachers have just been booted because they flunked competency exams or failed to meet other criteria to earn their state license***

Yet, the NEA has the gall to accuse homeschoolers of suffering from education neglect.

In defense of the teachers who charge racism, I did not see a single question regarding Kwanzaa or Cinco de Mayo.

"I don't know that I agree with that part."

Sorry, but a Masters Degree is a requirement for all New York State teachers if they want permanent certification. They have up to five years to complete their Masters.

"Is there any way we could see a sample of that test?"

If this test is like any other government test, the teachers are provided with workbooks and sample tests with answers before the test is given. They may even be offered classes on the upcoming tests. I find it hard to believe that some of these folks failed the tests 13 times. They're certainly getting their money's worth from their Union.

Don't you mean "where our society has gone?"

cried racism

Gee, what a surprise. I guess it's a helluva lot easier than looking in the mirror and admitting they're ignoramuses.

When people wonder why kids just aren't learning...a quarter of the overall problem is bad teachers. The unions won't admit it because they don't want unhappy union members. But I saw this already in the 1970s. Whoever got through college, got a degree, and needed a job...got into teaching. Its a sad fact of American life.

The same question I posed 35 years ago when I first became a father !. Make the sacrifices, pay the price: your children will be " hungry again" & surprise you by exceeding all your expectations despite the school if you're a supportive parent ( there still are superlative educators in the public system )! Don't be so overprotective! What type of private school ? The type that John Kerry & Ted Kennedy send their children to ? They're "elitists"! Heaven forbid if your daughter has to sit next to their obnoxious, nonachieving offspring ! It sounds like you have an achiever - give her some slack !)You're worried about a tax break ? Your priorities are distorted ! God Bless You !
