Some Fear Media Will Seek Graphic Details; Others Say Public Should Hear
NEWARK, N.J. -- Depending on whom you talk to, there is dread and support for the Thursday's release of transcripts of emergency calls made from the World Trade Center towers during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
A state judge in New Jersey ruled Friday that the transcripts of emergency transmissions must be released by 5 p.m. EDT Thursday.
The Port Authority, which owned the trade center, argued it was trying to protect the privacy of victims' families by preventing the release of the transcripts. They cover radio transmissions and calls to Port Authority police on the morning of the attacks.
A woman whose husband died in the towers said she dreads the release of the transcripts.
"For me and my children, it's like being slapped in the face with it happening again," she said.
But another widow welcomed the release of transcripts, saying the public needs the knowledge.
Some people fear the media will only seek the most graphic details

I know we should never forget, but I sure wouldn't want my last desperate words broadcast to the world, nor those of anybody I loved.
Let's remember in other ways. Why isn't that Web-documentary with the Enya song played on TV on 9/11, for example?

I think it's only transcripts, not the actual audios. And the vast majority of people in this country probably didn't know anybody in those buildings. So it's not like we'll read these transcripts and know who the people are. I don't particularly care to know who made what phone call. They were all human beings--I don't need to know their names.
I can't remember the man's name, but I think I spoke to him over the years in relation to my job, and other people at my company dealt with him pretty regularly. It was a man who worked for Marsh & McLennan, and it turns out he was on the phone with someone that my boss knows right when the plane hit. The other man only knew at first that they were talking and then the phone call was cut off. Of course, it didn't take long after the news broke all over the world for him to figure out that he was the last person to ever speak with the man from MarshMac. I think their office was in the direct path of one of the planes.

Translate the calls into Arabic. Beam them into Saudi Arabia over the entire radio and TV frequency spectrum all day long on the 11th. Drop nukes at midnight.

Christopher James Hanley, 34, New York, N.Y., USA
manager of business development, Radianz
Confirmed dead, World Trade Center, at/in building
Christopher was at Windows of the World when the plane struck.
He made several calls to 911 before the towers fell. I suspect at least one of the calls will be in the report released tomorrow.
A friend of mine who is a priest told me that several days before the attack he needed someone to become the Godfather to a child. Chris willing took on the request of the family.

All of the above what you said, and add that President Bush misled us about the reason for the war on terror. I am so disgusted by the rewriting of history and the "how quickly we forget" attitude of the public about Sept 11th. Our very security is threatened by these liars.

These should be released and played over and over until the people in this country remember why we are at war, and why we need to continue.

The public DOES need the knowledge.
Amen...lest this get PC'd under the rug.
(The saddest damned thing is that I am having a most difficult time finding 'net pictures of the jumpers anymore....history erasure?)

The Port Authority is a joint agency of NY and NJ -- full name is "The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey".

Yes, I hope nobody knows them. I worked for Marsh McClennan for several years in the 6th Ave. headquarters and only left when they moved to the WTC.
Fortunately, all of the people I knew by name there got out, but I'm sure some of them that I didn't really know very well and whose names I wouldn't recognize ... didn't get out.
