No flame intended but I've got to ask -- In what way or ways do you see Arnold as "more of a pure Republican"?

I don't want to disturb the quiet zone, but can anyone touting Tom's pledge to "enforce" Prop 187, to "give it its fair day in court" (which, to be sure, it didn't have in appellate court thanks to Davis' dropping it) ... point me to any respected legal authority saying this is a legally valid option?

To me it seems fairly clear: the federal trial court overturned it on numerous grounds, principally that only the feds can regulate immigration matters. It was appealed by Wilson's team but wasn't decided yet (or, I believe, even argued yet to the usual panel of 3 randomly-selected 9th Circus judges) when Davis took over and "mediated" it into oblivion. But it's final, done, over: the judgment blocking enforcement of the law stands, and any attempt to enforce it by the state's governor not only will fail but also will lead to "George Wallace" comparisons. It's too late to reopen the case or to appeal to the Supremes. Only a change in federal law can alter the outcome.

Handel has said repeatedly that he favors Arnold in a number of very tailored ways, including (1) tightwad; (2) but won't "take the pledge"; (3) pro-choice, pro-gay-rights. Bill likes all three. I think he jokingly called him an "honorary Jew," but then Bill, who is Jewish, is ever making such Jackie-Mason-ish comments.

McClintock has been in debates (albeit not in a race for governor) before, right? Is audio or video of those debates available anywhere? or even a good news analysis of the participants' performances?

I'll go check on his webpage to see how he plans on addressing this issue. I have a couple of other things I have to take care of first. If I recall, it might involve putting it back on the ballot.

Bill Handel is:

1) liberal-moderate. he's probably against the recall but will vote for Ahnold (guessing here, don't quote me)
2) he's always abrasive

Schwarzenegger is more of a small-government Republican, while McClintock seems to buy into the big-government agenda of regulating private lives. McClintock's not as bad as some, but he does seem more inclined than Schwarzenegger to have government intrude in areas that it should stay out of.

Although McClintock may favor laws that "regulate private lives" in some sense, like those restricting abortion, more than does Schwarzenegger, I question your assessment of Schwarzenegger (who is my preferred candidate, actually, at this point) as someone who'd have a smaller government overall than would McClintock. McClintock is tighter than Joan Rivers' (remaining) facial skin.

Well since you know all the answers then you won't have to ask me questions.

You like the lyberal, vote for the lyberal...just don't come on this thread with your predictions, "legal" opinions and ask me or anyone else to do your research for you.

And when 2006 comes around and the budget is still not balanced, taxes and fees are not cut at best and more likely higher, we are in deeper debt than we are now and the Dimwit Party is beating the GOP over the head like a pinata "three years later and things are worse than before" don't come crying to me about how the lyberal RINO screwed you and the rest of the fan club!

Yes and yesterday on the McClintock thread a poster by the name of "Rome 2000" whizzed all over this thread.

When Reagan LOST the Republican nomination, twice, he always got behind the selected candidate. I expect 2nd. place, whoever that is, to do the honorable thing. I don't want "Sub-Commander Bustamante" to be Gov., either, but this recall is about Davis. Lest we forget.

Remember the 11th. Commandment: "Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican".

Kelly, don't slip into personal abuse again -- let alone a battle of wits. You're heavily outgunned, marine.

You're under, or falsely trying to convey, the impression I like the result and status quo with Prop 187. I don't.

But it's a FACT that the case's judgment BARS 187's enforcement. It's all cute and everything that, when I ask politely for any competent legal authority supporting McClintock's stated plans to enforce it nevertheless,

you respond, not with any such authority, but with personal abuse: "lyberal," "lyberal," etc.

My point is let's run the campaign and let McClintock and Schwarzenegger lay out their programs. Let's see how the voters respond and let's see which would have the better chance of winning if the other were to pull out (it does no good for one to pull out if the other cannot pick up enough votes to win).

Instead of saying he will never pull out, McClintock would be smarter to challenge Schwarzenegger to agree that they should both pledge to combine behind the stronger candidate once the voters' preference is clear.

Based on his performance this morning I expect McClintock to do well in any debate. Whether he can allay voters' fears enough to win is yet to be seen. He'll do well on fiscal issues, but may lose ground on social issues.

The "No Tax Increase" Pledge is essentially a stunt. GHWB took it and then raised taxes anyway. In the end, whoever's in charge (even McClintock) will have to do what is necessary. What's important is their basic philosophy; Schwarzenegger and McClintock will look for better solutions first while Bustamante will gleefully embrace higher taxes.

Your point about Bustamante and his affiliation with the racist, separatist group MEChA is well-taken. Those who haven't already done so should read Michelle Malkin's article.

I just sent an e-mail to Tom asking him how he plans to handle "bringing 187 back to the courts". I couldn't find any specific answer on his senate or governor website. I'll let you know when I hear back (and I know I will hear back because he is that kind of candidate). It might be a week or so but I will copy you.
