If a vet has a service connected injury I am all for them receiving medical care.
Everyone else needs to get their own health insurance.
Bears repeating. This should be brought up to our representatives. Our Military is IMPORTANT and I dont mind tax dollars going to them at all!

I'm just a non-career combat vet from the '60s with no monetary benefit... but I can relate to your situation. my retirement benefit from a blue chip company was reduced by the amount of my social security benefit and to add injury on top of injury the company had sold my division to Group Bull, a French company, and they in turn cut our retirement benefits over 60% :^(...rto

Thank you for the nice post Peach. I am not a greedy person. But, when a person has to do 20 years to earn a pension, he earns the pension. IF he is injured and has a disability as a result of that service, that is a separate issue. The military are the only ones who have to pay their own way in this issue. If a person goes into the military for say four years, gets injured and has a disability, he gets that full disability. But, for me to get that full disability, I have to reduce my retired pay by the same amount. Neither has anything to do with the other. Paying for the disability is paying for the loss of use of that portion of my body. Paying for the 20 years is for serving the time. For many years we have fought this battle. They whine that it cost too much, but we seem to find the monies to pay all these social, vote buying schemes. We deserve to be treated the same as any other federal employee. If a person goes into the military, comes out after a few years, has a military connected disability, then goes to work for the federal government and earns a pay check then a retirement. Neither the pay check nor his federal civilian retirement are reduced by the amount of his VA disability. Only military get treated this way.

I'm with you all the way and can only repeat - for this administration to refuse to meet past and present commitments would be a completely dishonorable thing to do. Without our soldiers, we would not enjoy the wonderful lifestyle that we have here in this country. Thank you for your service and may you have all the blessings you wish for.

Bravo! God bless you Retired Army.
I get so sick of hearing people who have never served complaining about veterans benefits as if they are some sort of handout, and we sit around plotting and waiting for our share just like a bunch of Welfare recieients.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
I was medically discharged,mid-career, from the US Navy as a direct result of a shipboard explosion that occurred about 1 inch from my face. I went 40 days with only rudimentary medical treatment because my submarine could not surface and give our position away. I worked hard as I could to rehabilitate, but it just was not possible, and they boarded me and medically retired me.
It took 5 more years, after the discharge, to appeal at every level and finally get service connected veterans pension from the VA. Another 5 years and endless appeals to get the amount I recieve now.
In the meantime, I recovered as well as I could, sucked it up, and worked whatever I could to make ends meet. I worked 3 jobs, went to college, and hurt a lot. I had to retire from a second career I loved at 42 because these injuries became so severe I couldnt work.
Today, I am legally blind in one eye, and I have almost totally lost hearing in one ear and the other has 50% hearing loss. I refused 100 percent pension because I dont want to be owned and ruled by the VA, and I want to stand on my own two feet.
I also drill faithfully, once a month, with the state guard, and have since 9-11-01. I cant go to Iraq, but I can damn sure help the younger generation get ready for what they meet over there.
Thats the story of a disabled veteran. Do I look like someone who wants a damned handout?

What is troubling on here is putting up with idiotic comments from the peanut gallery! It is not just on this thread, it is becoming ubiquitous here on FR. The main stream press and the dims are getting desperate, with their articles and speeches. Too many Freepers are falling into the trap, believing the idiocy of their claptrap! GWB has yet to play his hand, today was just the dealing of the cards.
To: woodyinscc
Can you believe quoting the NY Times, Wash Post, LA Times, CNN, British newspapers and the list goes on for sources like they are reliable?
If any of those organizations said the sky was blue and no rain, I would take my umbrella with me.
Don't know if some Freepers are that gullible or they are doing it on purpose with their own spin and misquotes to suit their own agenda. Just know something doesn't add up around here.
